Would it be unwise to attach a magnetic mount antenna to the top case of a SDS case, or in some other very close position?

I would not do it.
Out of curiosity - why?
There isn't any magnetic data storage media in the radio.
Nor anything internal that I'd think magnetism could mess with, and the metal case is a shield anyway.

However, the metal case of the radio technically isn't big enough to give you a proper ground plane.

Example:
For 850 MHz, you'd need a ground plane with a minimum radius of approx 8"-10", which is roughly a quarter wavelength. A larger surface, like 12-14 inches would be even better for performance. A simple metal sheet or a cookie tin is a good base.

In the days when I was in electronic school we would introduce a magnet in some of our school projects and watch changes on the shop oscilloscope and some of the time we had to retune the coils because of changes. Our instructor was a retired Navy Chief his comment was why do you think they build shielding around some circuits.

Radiowaves are an electronic voltage that uses magnet waves as a vehicle to be able to travel thru air. It's really bad to use a magnet close to any radio components. I have had issues with some professional repeaters that didn't perform as they should but demagnetizing all its metal parts cured it.

I use to do it all the time on the 200 and 536. No harm done. I have a couple of these and use mini tri pods now

The magnets on the cheap antennas I use are small. No way I would use a mobile magnetic trunk or roof mount
