Any Class One railroads have any plans to run steam excursions this year, including the UP or C&O 614? Likewise, any word on NKP 765 or PM 1225?

I would like to see the N & W 611 on the road again, if they could get it out of N & W Museum in Roanoke. Where is the 614 kept?

Me too! I really miss the 611 and the 1218 very much and I use to make it a point to ride behind them every chance I got. Conversely, I only saw the 614 from the distance when it was running on the Chessie Steam Specials many years ago.

The last I heard, the 614 is stored someplace out in New Jersey and was for sale a few years ago. Likewise, there were some fall foliage excursions with the 614 around the area, but lately however, the cost of liability insurance is through the roof, making it next to impossible for rail preservation groups to run passenger excursions. Although the costs of insurance was already high in the 1990s, the prices and policies covering such events was really compounded by 9-11. Therefore, not only do you have to cover the costs of insurance, but security and emergency planning in the event the unthinkable might happen on an excursion.

Nonetheless, hopefully SP 4449 will get a chance to stretch her legs this year along with many other iron horses that need some good exercise.

I saw a 2006 schedule for 844 last week, but I can't find it now. It looked like she had quite a few opportunities to stretch her legs.

I heard that liability costs were preventing 614 from operating. 765 is supposed to be back in service this year as well. The folks who operate 1225 are still working out the schedule, and no schedule is in place for 261 yet either.

I miss 611 and 1218. Two weeks ago, I drove from Alabama to Virginia on a business trip. If I would have had more time going up or coming back, I would have gone by the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke and pay my respects to both of those engines.

They're out of service, but definately not forgotten!

Yes, she's there along with 1218. They also have more locomotives, but I can't remember exactly what they have.

BTW, I heard that 261 is going to make a trip this summer.

Thanks "hmarnell" for posting the UP Steam schedule! I had no idea there would be a steam engine tour through Oklahoma. I've got to get the family out to see it. I can probably get to either one, although the Guymon stop has a long layover. I see that it coincides with Guymon's "Pioneer Days."

Now that will be an event: bull riding, parades, barbecue, and a real steam engine on display! It doesn't get any better for small town America.

From what I believe, they use to have C&O 1604 and another smaller steam locomotive. However, I do know that they have NKP 2-8-4 763, and PRR GG-1 4919.

Thanks for the info! We drove over 150 miles last year to see 844 but this time it'll be within 2 miles of home! I think it's been over 40 years since we've had any steam power out here. Sure wish 3985 could be with her. It's GREAT watching them work together. I've only had that experience twice.

Thanks for the info. I am going to try to get down in that area this summer. If I do, will try to get to Roanoke.

Unfortunately most steam programs are dead due to liability insurance costs. I do recall just recently reading that the NKP 765 has been run, they're just fine-tuning her up. In regard to the C&O 614, here's two pics I got of her a few years ago running between Hoboken, NJ and Port Jervis, NY.

The #142 is a 2-8-2 Mikado from the New York, Susquehanna, and Western RR.
