Can someone tell me how the FDNY buses are dispatched. I was listening to the app the other night called FDNY Manhattan EMS however many times while in NYC I see different buses other than FDNY buses. Some say Roosevelt Hospital, Beekman Hospital etc.

Just trying to learn when someone calls 911 in Manhattan requesting an ambulance what frequency are they dispatched on

Many thanks

Mark

Manhattan EMS

Manhattan is divided into mn south, central and north. Depending upon the location of the call determines the unit that will respond. Certain hospital in Manhattan do run there own ambulances that are part of fdny ems system. They have to follow regulations that are set by fdnyems.

The ambulances are identified on the radio by the 2-digit battalion number and a letter that indicates BLS, ALS, HazTac, or Rescue Medics. Most ambulances you see are dispatched over the FDNY EMS radio system, even the ones from hospitals. They are all given an identifier and some are FDNY, some are from hospitals. For example, 01C is an FDNY ambulance out of Station 4. 09A is an ambulance out of St. Lukes/Roosevelt on W 59th Street.

Basically, there are three kinds of ambulances in NYC:
(a) FDNY EMS (now EMD) buses dispatched by FDNY EMD for 911 calls
(b) Voluntary hospital buses that are dispatched by FDNY EMD for 911 calls
(c) Other (including private transport buses, volunteer ambulances, etc), not dispatched by FDNY

When you call 911 for an ambulance, you'll get either a bus in group (a) or group (b), depending on location and availability at the time. Both are part of the EMS system and have either BLS or ALS capability. The only difference is in who owns the equipment and pays the crews. (A volunatary hospital EMS bus will provide the same care and can take the patient to any appropriate hospital ED; they aren't tied to the hospital that owns them).

"Now EMD?" Emergency Medical Division?

"Emergency Medical Dispatch", which is part of the EMS division of FDNY and dispatches EMS and voluntary busses
