MSP - March 2, 2009 - Michigan's 'Operation Yellow Jacket' is a Hoax

The Michigan State Police (MSP) wants citizens to know that a widely distributed e-mail message about a "31-day speeding ticket frenzy" in Michigan titled "Operation Yellow Jacket" is completely false. There is no such effort underway at this time, or any time in the future, to generate revenue through the issuance of traffic citations. Citizens should regard the "Operation Yellow Jacket" warning as nothing more than an urban legend.
As a reminder, MSP traffic enforcement initiatives always involve a uniformed officer in a marked patrol vehicle.

Versions of this e-mail have been circulating in cyberspace for a few years. The recent addition of Operation Yellow Jacket comes from a work-zone safety enforcement effort conducted by the Pennsylvania State Police. Several other states including California, Hawaii, Kentucky, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas have also been targeted in this hoax.

Thats just the HOMETOWN SECURITY TEAM. They are a selective traffic enforcement unit. They work all areas of the district and most districts have them. IT's a year around thing.

This is fake, they may not admit it if it was true but I would know and I know it's not true.

As soon as I received this, I checked snopes.com and found out it is false. A couple of things made me want to check it out

1. It state something about using part time troopers, I always been told Michigan has No reserve or part-time troopers.

2. 50 new umarked cars, just for this project... no way, would Gov Jenny approved that kind of money for the state police, she is too anti-state police

Even tho this isnt true, there seems to be an increase of MSP officers on 696 and 96 lately, but this happens every year, when the weather get nice.
Nice weather = heavy right foot = more police presence. Thats very simple math.

I'm not so sure it was a "hoax". As broke as this state is they would probably do something like that. Word probably was leaked out and they had to deny it and/or cancel it.

The story is plausible, but the MDOT trucks with super motors says false story.

Ray Air:

I really think it was a hoax, for a number of reasons

1.When I checked snopes.com. this hoax has been going on for many years, people just change the name of the state police and start it over again.

2. The hoax also mentioned off duty State Troopers,, Michigan dosen't have this kind of money in their budget.

3. It mentioned part time troopers, Michigan dosen't have part-time troopers.

4. It also said 50 new umarked cars, Michigan doesn't have this kind of money in their budget either.

I received this hoax email before anything was posted on this site and I checked it out with snopes.com, it is a hoax.

So, it's not a hoax because it might happen - but it is a hoax because of MDOT super motors aren't real?

Are you a politician too?

As noted several times, anyone with even the simplest grasp of searching on the Internet can find reason to KNOW this is not plausible.

I love it when these legends hit the public. LOL they crack me up. The State Police have a lot more going on than worrying about this type of thing. There is no way they will devote resources to this with the cut backs they are going through.

DOT super motors. What a crock. Lets say a SUPER truck whaled lights and sirens and tried to pull you over, who would pull over for that? NO WAY. I would call 911 and ask what is going on first. When a marked car got involved that would prompt me to stop. My first thought would be impersonating a police officer.

With the cutbacks where would the state get the fundage to pay for super trucks anyway??? The amount of cash the MSP gets from tickets is minimal, totally does not justify the cost of the truck let alone the cost of the troopers.
