State Senators & State Representatives

I wonder if we could find an attorney out there to file a class action lawsuit on behalf of the citizens of Michigan charging the Governor and state legislature with deriliction of duty, malfeasance, embezzlement of funds since they can't agree on any type of solution to this problem. They obviously can't handle money very well. I think since the state will be shutdown they should not be able to collect state income taxes out of my paycheck!!!!!!

I am so happy to see you include the state legislature in your post.

Our State Reprsentatives and State Senators have been sitting in Lansing all of this year debating this budget but have done NOTHING to solve the problem!!!!!!!

Yes, Jenny is wrong but our State Representatives & State Senators are just as wrong as Jenny. All three have been playing politics!

MSP commissioned officers (Lts and up) have stated they will work without pay.

Troopers are going to show up for their scheduled shifts tomorrow with the intention of working without being paid. Word has it they will be ordered to go home upon arriving and told to leave state property or face disciplinary action.

Incidentally, the members of the Governor's Detail were deemed "critical assets" to public safety and were not affected by the shutdown.

What follows is a release from the MSPTA.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact Mike Moorman
East Lansing 517-336-7782
September 28, 2007

The Michigan State Police Troopers Association (MSPTA) is criticizing Governor Granholm’s
lockout of 85% of the State Police troopers and sergeants from their duties to protect Michigan’s citizens on Monday. The Association has been informed that only 237 of its 1,554 troopers and sergeants will be working when the state shuts down. “This dismal number equates to 85% of our troopers and sergeants being locked out. Essentially the backbone of this department” said Mike Moorman, Association president. “The governor cannot say that she is maintaining adequate essential services when the bulk of the state police are sitting at home, locked out from their worksites.”

The need for State Police service was never more evident than a few days ago when a Lansing area single mother found that her child did not return home from school. While local agencies bickered over jurisdictional lines and refused to respond, a State Police trooper took swift action and helped this mother locate her child.

Moorman added, “It makes no sense that Michigan’s citizens, along with our partners in law enforcement are being deprived of sufficient public safety services. In addition to state police patrols across the state, support services to local law enforcement such as forensic science laboratories and Homeland Security are also being shut down due to this lockout. Governor Granholm has made a poor decision. Obviously, she has not consulted with the Legislature to determine what is in the best safety interests of Michigan’s citizens.”

Association Vice President Chris Luty stated, “Our troopers and sergeants have taken an oath to protect Michigan’s citizens. Governor Granholm has taken a similar oath. The integrity of those oaths is unconditional. In conjunction with the Michigan State Police Command Officers Association (MSPCOA), we are calling on our members to continue to honor that oath and report for duty on October 1.”

Last I was told by a Trooper is that they have to have 30 days notice of a pending layoff before the State can simply just not pay them.

So "IF" that is true or still true then regardless of what she says go happens she still has to pay the troopers for the next 27 days before their no payment status kicks in.

I think that is the case for most state workers. I read an article today that said the state workers union will demand their employees show up for work on Monday, as it would be illegal to "lay them off" without proper notice. However, the state constitution says they can't be paid without a budget in place, so this could get very interesting. Who's ultimately going to be right? I predict riots.

I posted this yesterday when it appeared on my local news agencies page.

A little off topic here...I never saw a story anywhere about the missing child referred to in this release, but shame on the agencies more worried about jurisdiction than a missing child. In cases such as that, boundaries should be dropped until the child is located. Kudos to MSP for stepping up and doing what the local PD's should have done.

Yeah, I'm local to this area, and heard nothing about it. Chances are it was on the lansing/delta border and while the dispatchers were on tri-county figuring it out, the troop just went and found the kid. Or the kid was found by mom and the troop happened to be first to radio it in.
I know both ingham and eaton disptach the troops for their counties, so this whole story sounds suspect.
What I'd like to know is why the story of the troop hitting the moped in GL on 9-21 never made the press. (And no, I in no way am impying the troop did anything wrong, but was pretty amazed it never made the news).

Because scanner-listening isn't a high priority at the press...

So have the unions now been notified that they may be laid off in 30 days?
Or is someone in the Governor's office not having the foresite to think that far ahead?

The current "fix" is only in effect for 30 days...it's only a temporary budget extension.

No, it's a temporary budget extension while they implement the new taxes. Once that's done then the new budget is in place. The emergency is over, there will be no more shutdown (at least for a year ;> )

According to today's Free Press, Big Business organizations across the state are banding together to get the tax hike stopped before it gets enacted..

We have a friend who is a sergeant with the Motor Carrier Division of the Michigan State Police, We saw her Saturday and she told us then she was given noticed that she was officialy laid off until further notice. Her days off this week were Sataday and Sunday, so she was given notice ahead of time. She also said that both Motor Carrier & State Police Superiors told her that this shut out would last more than a day or two. None of then thought that the State Senate &/or the State House would approve Jenny's plan right away!
