Inside my house I can normally only hear the Coast Guard’s regular conditions broadcasts. If I go outside I can sometimes pick up actual marine traffic. Got a discone to try in the attic (which is very tall) and hope to improve my reception. I’m 5 blocks from the bay and a few miles from the coast - but even being this close it’s still difficult to pick up marine traffic, as being indoors and the actual ship traffic is often too far away to pick up. Keep trying!

So I hope you have your manual on hand and you're looking at all the stuff but you should be receiving multiple weather stations loud and clear with your rooftop. Atlantic City is 162.4, Hardystown,162.5, Howell Township, 162.45, Lewes, Delaware and Philadelphia might be competing on 162.475.

How is NJICS phase ll coming across?

As far as sitting on 156.8 which is the emergency distress frequency, rarely used except for Coast Guard to announce information about to be transmitted on channel 22, 157.1 .. listen to channel 22 tomorrow morning on the holiday weekend and if you don't hear multiple marine advisories, notices to mariners and other communication then I have no idea what to say your problem could be. Depends on how well you're picking up everything else to confirm that your antenna is working properly.

Again, with your manual in hand make sure you didn't accidentally put on the attenuator and that you don't see.. ATT on your display.

Coast Guard Sectors have regular scheduled broadcasts two times a day in the morning and night. My local sector has one around 8 AM and the other around 9 PM. You should be able to receive these.

Urgent Marine Information Broadcast (UMIB) are used during SAR cases and will be any time.

Marine Information Broadcast (MIB) will be sent for any navigation warnings. Also they came at any time.

The UMIB and MIB will be retransmitted when active many times. Rescue 21 has the ability to record them to make it available to be resent.

In closing should be plenty of marine and CG radio traffic this weekend being a holiday and one the major boating weekends of the summer.

Could my problem have something to do with squelch setting
It could be, if it's set too high it'll be deaf. On my 15x squelch at 1 works good, on my 436hp setting it at 2 is good. I don't have an SDS. What is yours at?

so as long as he turns on every available service type listed that will cover custom also.
The custom service types are over on the right side of the page in the profile. Modulation for VHF marine band should be set to FM. Marine band is exempt from the narrowbanding requirement.

no, it is a setting to either let the weak static filled transmissions in or keep them out.
0 or 1 = all static
2 = this is the lowest before the static setting, and many prefer it.
3 = keeps out some weaker stations.
15 = high power only or someone in the same room with you. YMMV

i lived 1/8th mile from charlotte harbor in Florida, and heard very little marine radio use, they probably just yelled at each other.

Lots of comments, but has anyone confirmed whether Barnegat Light uses CG-121 or another CG channel?

The other stations covering Sector Delaware Bay all have a specific working channel. CG-114 (Cape May, Manasquan) and CG-117 (Atlantic City) cover the NJ coast above and below Barnegat. CG-121 is used for ops on the Delaware River and Bay (Station Philadelphia) in PA/NJ/DE and Indian River has been noted using CG-115 on the south end of the Sector.

I don't spend any more time at the shore like I used to, just two weeks this year but I'm on the Delaware near the Burlington Bristol Bridge.

As previously stated in this thread for Coast Guard, I listen to 16, 22, 81, CG 121, CG 409. Coast Guard auxiliary out of Bordentown used to on Channel 83 before the virus and I'm not sure what's happening in Bordentown so I don't listen to it anymore.

I know at the shore they also use Channel 21 and 23.

Great information on the p25 frequencies at the shore! Thanks.

It's strange because even with the rooftop antenna I get CG-114 and CG-121 on regular basis but not CG-117. Are they encrypted?
