Well, just generally, there probably is not much interest in Marine radio if you are in Kansas, but if you are near the coast or a major waterway, there is interest. Having grown up in New Orleans, I used to listen to river traffic all the time (years ago), but interest in Marine waned as I moved around. Here in Houston, I really don't listen, but then again I don't live near the water, I bet the guys in the ship channel area have some channels in the scanner dedicated to it though. I guess in San Antonio there isn't much (local stuff I mean) but any seaport or major river port would have many of our members with interest. Anyway, you asked for opinions and mine would be it probably is a good idea. :)

See, that's the neat thing about Marine - there's universal VHF, UHF, and HF frequencies in use, the latter being pretty interesting. There's a lot of good marine HF traffic that can be heard even if you're landlocked.

As an example...I don't live near an ocean, but this past field day weekend I heard ham stations from out on the Atlantic. Yeah, that's a ham example, but there's a ton of Maritime HF channels.

When looking at it, over half of the states in the US have some sort of coastline, if you include the Great Lakes. These coastline areas have some rather large Metropolitan populations. Canada and Mexico also have massive coastlines. Whenever I travel to a coastal area I normally have as least 1 bank or V-File (PRO-96) dedicated to some sort of Marine traffic. I'm sure more folks would listen to marine communications if the information was put out there.

I live in the Balt/DC metro area. There is a lot of marine activity here: Chesapeake bay, Port of Baltimore, Annapolis, Ocean City Maryland, etc. I would like to see a marine forum.

A clear example of someone who didn't read the thread. Marine forum was created on 06/29/2006.
