A marine radio will only receive marine frequencies and in many cases illegal to use on land. What you are looking for is a scanner, but as stated above more information is needed such as where you are located and what exactly you want to monitor.

I assume (?) you are talking about the Marine FM band - any scanner will cover that band.

If you want to listen to HF Marine band stuff, then you need a shortwave (HF) receiver with CW and SSB. How much you wanna pay? A professional receiver (and I mean a radio that you are getting paid to use!) will set you back a few thousands - start thinking in the area of the Icom 9500 at $13k for starters - then start thinking Rhode & Schwartz and lottery money. Or stick with an Icom R75 for $600 or so - less on EPay but you take your chances.

Just my 2 cents...the Standard Horizon HX370S covers the marine frequencies and has 40 Programmable Land Mobile Channels (137-174MHz)...in my area that covers police, fire, 2 meter ham, etc.

It does need software and a cable to do this, but it can legally transmit on marine as well as ham and business bands.

If that's what you are looking for.

The Icom IC-M88 has similar capabilities, just costs twice as much.

I was not aware that marine radios could be programmed with fire, ambulance, police etc. I'm just not sure why someone would buy a marine radio unless he or she could legally transmit on it as well as listen to other agencies. If you just want to listen then a scanner is the way to go.

EMS540,

You just don’t get licensed for a Private Coast Station on VHF-FM Marine radio without showing a need to operate. You need to justify the need to use the marine band to obtain the license from the FCC. Most are marine type businesses that need to contact vessels. Just wanting to talk with your buddies out fishing won’t do it.

If you have a scanner, why do you need a marine radio that picks up those services? You also said something about HF for helos. You will need a shortwave receiver to hear HF.

What licence is it that you will be granted?

Do you work with or for the USCG?

What service will you be providing for them that they don't already have from their abundant network?

Talk to the guys you work with and let them guide you as to what radio. Then if you need to learn how the menu works you can ask them. Probably going to end up being more than one radio needed. Spellcheck, punctuation, shift key all bonuses.

Well, now you're aware. I know folks who use the HX370S just for the LMR frequencies and do not use the marine frequencies at all and I know some who use both.

I think I've pimped this radio enough.

Untitled 1 take a few practice tests. see Commercial Radio Operator License Program: Commercial Operator Home for what license type you will actually require.

as far as fd/pd/ems you will have to have permission from each licensed agency to tx on their licensed freqs, without it you will face HUGE fines. you won't have to be licensed, as their part 90 license covers you on their licensed freqs.

Looks to be a pretty easy test. I'll have to add it to my list of "to done's".

So many of you people who reply on here act like you all have superiority complexes.
Why don't you just answer the damn question without tootin your horn.
You don't impress anyone except maybe yourselves. Did you get goosebumps from reading your post?
