I primarily monitor the five county fire departments (Polk, Lynn, Marion, Benton, Yamhill) and Salem FD around Marion county and was curious as I hear them on VHF but never on their TG’s on the Salem P-25 system which is programmed into my SDS-100

Anyone know if they ever use them or are they for mutual aid incidents?

Something’s wrong with your programming or settings as they are very active on the Salem P25 system. I hear them every day.

What talkgroup specifically are you not hearing?

with 700 and 800 Mhz, the radio waves act almost like light.
and the FCC now wants systems to use the least amount of power they can and even to 'point' the antennas down to decrease coverage.
this might sound odd, but that way a frequency can be reused closer than before. (there are only so many)
so it is probably the distance, angle of TX antenna, and lower power that are against you.
you could take the radio to each county to make sure.
with my county the signal gets lower about 1 mile from the border, and is gone 1 mile outside of it.

Because the Talkgroups are patched, i would just listen to VHF. You hear everything with out missing traffic.

Previously I downloaded from RR database, so Marion county FD TG’s (5) 1 dispatch and 4 fire tac channels populated into the Salem P-25 site 1
I have them under Salem FD in my SDS-100.

since I hear Keizer FD dispatch along with all the city of Salem FD TG’s with no issues I would assume I’d hear MCFD with no issues?

MCF is dispatched on Valley Dispatch same a KZF, so if you are hearing the tones go out for MCF you should hear the MCF units responding on Ops 51 or 53. There are no active talkgroups patched to VHF, WVCC can do it form the console when needed. Of course Central 1 is still used for Polk Co dispatch.

Looking at DSDplus logs, it is a patch, no radios affiliated to that talkgroup, source is "external". That's the best I got for ya.
