To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I just purchased a TYT MD-9600 and have started programming it for simplex operation. The radio is referred to as version 3. The hardware version is V02.08, firmware is D006.007, and CPS software is V01.23.

I've spent quite a bit of time programming and have followed various paths, but to keep it short I'll describe one core issue.

If I open the CPS software, select "new", add a uhf and vhf channel, create a zone, add those channels to the zone, and then write those settings to the radio, everything seems to be fine. At least the radio doesn't complain, but I've not fully tested the radio operation.

If I then read the configuration from the radio I see in the Basic Information window that the Frequency Range is only UHF, even though the configuration I wrote to the radio was set to a Frequency Range of both UHF and VHF. If I read the configuration from the radio and then try to write that configuration back to the radio without making any changes then I receive an error message which says "The Frequency Range is wrong!".

I've installed TYT Factory software on my computer and when I read the radio configuration it shows both UHF and VHF Frequency Ranges, so that part seems to be ok.

At this point it appears that I could craft a configuration file to fit my needs and write it to the radio, but I would need to keep a copy of whatever I create. If I lost my original configuration file then I would not be able to copy the configuration from the radio, modify it, and then write it back as I do with my MD-380s.

Is this a known issue, and if so is there a way to resolve the problem?

Thanks,

Rob

Rob,

I just received my MD-9600 with the same issue. When I read the radio with the Factory Software my Frequency Data (B) shows 1500 1600. Try this with yours as well, I think this is the issue.

The radio will transmit at 150MHz and above, so the Factory Software must not be properly setting the VHF range.

Please let me know if you discover a fix for this.

Thank you.

Rob,

I discovered the fix.

Run Factory Software.
Read Radio.
Set Frequency Range and Frequency Range (B) to none
Write Radio.
Wait.
Read Radio.
Set Frequency Range to 400-480MHz
Set Frequency Range (B) to 136-174MHz
Write Radio.
Wait.
Read Radio and confirm.

Now close out of Factory Software.
Open CPS 1.23
Read from radio and confirm.

This is exactly what my new MD9600 is doing. What is the "factory software" ? and where do you find it ? I didn't receive a disk with my radio.

Thanks Stephen for spending the time to figure it out and to post a possible solution, but I can't give it a try since I sent my radio back to where it came from. I could have lived with the programming issue, but after further testing I believe that the radio I received was defective. I could not get it to receive on either FM or digital. When testing with FM it produced nothing but white noise even though squelch was turned all the way up. The only way I could silence it was by using tone or digital squelch. Even with the squelch broken I was not able to receive audio from another radio.

I really wanted to like the radio. I have been waiting ever since the MD 9600 was announced, which was a long wait. When version one hit the street it was a real mess, but it got better with version two, and from what I've heard version three is a decent radio. I guess it was my bad luck to draw a lemon. Given the spotty history of the MD 9600 and my bad experience, I'm considering whether to get another one, buy a Connect Systems CS800D instead, or wait for the new AnyTone AT-D578UV dual band mobile DMR radio. At the moment I'm leaning toward waiting for the AnyTone.

Anytone AT-D578UV - DMR Dual Band Mobile Radio - Full duplex

Thanks again for helping out.
