hi i just bought the mfj-2286 for my first antenna and i am going to be useing it with the tripod that is also from mfj and i am a little unsure on the proper set up for the counterpoise i know that i need to attach the four copper wires around the base block and the other end of the wires that is connected together into one so i am not sure if i connect that part to a ground rod or what? any advice and does any one that has the same antenna as me have any pics of it fully set up that could help me.

Go here: MFJ 2286 Big Stick Vertical Antenna Product Reviews

Three hams have reviewed the 2286 and gave details on how they used it. One didn't even bother with the counterpoise and made contacts.

A counterpoise is not usually connected to a ground rod unless there are specific instructions to do so. They are laid out on the ground to give the antenna the other half of a dipole. A vertical is merely a dipole where the ground radials are the other part of the antenna system.
