I don't know.

I'm sure there is something like ACARS for the military but I would bet that it would be totally encripted. My son was in the navy as a radioman and he said almost everything left the ship encripted except routine voice chit-chat. I would think that anything they sent digitally would be encripted.

Blue Force Tracking

Rusty52,

Blue Force Tracking is the closest thing to the civilian ACARS system. It allows you to track aircraft, ships, ground vehicles, and other assets when equipped. Yes, it's all encrypted.

Here's some info.

The "MTX BFT Transmitter" link on that page has good info about the device used on many aircraft and helicopters. It's a two page PDF file.

The Army uses a related system called FBCB2 which does position reporting and a whole lot more.

Hello,
I regularly receive ACARS messages from military craft from my QTH in Northern Delaware but only for ACFT that transport people (AF-1, AF-2, support acft etc) No cargo planes, fighters or helos

I receive them on the standard ACARS freqs.

You do?? What does a military ACARS formatted message look like? I belive I've only seen commercial and general avaition messages. Pretty sure I wouldn't even reconize a military flight if I saw it. Also, when you say AF-1, do you mean you're tracking THE Air Force One? With all do respect, I kinda wonder about that-wouldn't be real good for security if every Tom, Dick, and Harry could monitor the movements of the President's plane.

Everyone already knows where the President is going and when. Heck the WH press office publishes it in advance usually IIRC. You already can hear Air Force One when they talk to air traffic control. That and it's pretty hard to hide that huge brightly painted 747 as it swoops into an airport. It is also pretty hard to hide that umpteen thousand member security detail and advance team and the local law enforcement running around making preparations and local telecom personnel making the necessary communications connectivity preparations especially if it is in a more rural area not use to such arrivals. It's pretty difficult to hide the President's or VPs movements.

I'd think people knowing where the plane is to be is the least of their worries.

Am more awake today then yesterday. Yes, conditionally, on all of that Hostile. But am fairly confident one cannot track the aircraft. Knowing when and where the plane's going is one thing-and yes that's pretty hard to hide. But to actually track while the plane is enroute. Hmm.

Just because AF1 uses ACARS, doesn't mean that they are broadcasting their position information via ACARS, Even if they did, generally speaking Presidential trips are public knowledge. People know when he's coming, where he's going, and when. Every Tom, Dick, and Harry already does monitor his movements, how do you think the press knows where to be? No classified information is passed via ACARS, there are many and various means of communication for that.
