When I Google AN/PRC 153, I don't get anything showing the radio's specifications. I also don't see them on the usual online sale sites. Hard to compare specs when they ain't none.

Grab some commercial p25 capable radios, load them up with freqs and run p25 with AES crypto. Easy peasy.
Harris p7300/XG-Series?XL-Series
Motorola XTS-series/APX-series/SRX-series
EF-Johnson EFJ-Series
Need to consider that these radios may not see a charger for days. Different from police/EMS use. May have repeaters or more likely simplex in mixed urban/rural areas. Better antennas and headset that fits under a helmet are essential.
EF-5100s can be had for very cheap, take the same accessories as the XTS series and will take xts5000 batteries. Kyloading easy and all options including fpp and crypto can be enabled. I have bought several in both VHF and UHF flavors. Easy to beat to **** and they still work. That's what we have been preaching in most of our posts, the PRC-153 is a Motorola XTS2500 mod III in range 1 UHF with AES encryption and they run about $120 each used in good working condition. That is probably the best radio available for the price you can get for the OPs purposes. Programming software is cheap and plentiful, programming cables, batteries, chargers, every kind of accy is also cheap and plentiful. You can't say that for the APX, SRX, EFJ or Harris radios.
Those batteries are 3100 ma? How many for two days continuous field ops? Digital radios use a lot of juice.

I'll second this. Either a 5100ES or a PRC-153 would be my preference for this application; personally I use EFJs. You'll need to modify your Hirose keyloader adapter (solder bridge between two pins). If you go the EFJ route, send me a PM and I'll help you out to the best of my ability.
As far as extended field use, NTN9177A clamshells can be modified for use with 5100s; I did one up yesterday. You'll be able to operate for a while with a pocket full of AAs. Unless going for a long commo shot, you should be running low power anyways to make yourself harder to DF.
How much are EFJ5100ESs and where do you get the programming software? Motorola PRC-153/XTS2500s are now down to $108 for good tested working units and there seems to be an unlimited supply. You can buy programming software on Ebay for $40.
