• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I've searched around a little bit and can't seem to find many specifics on the major differences between the Minitor IV and V. Can anyone enlighten me?

Batteries: V uses special battery pack,IV uses AAA type
Stored Voice available on V in 33-50mhz now,not available in the IV on lowband
V has a battery level indicator color led on top,IV does not
V is more rugged housing than IV,thicker and a bit bulkier than the IV
V features longer record time on Stored Voice over the IV ( 6 to 8 minutes I believe)
V is not field repairable at most shops and MSS shops,as well is the IV for the most part
V fully charged battery should last 3-5 days depending on call volume, monitoring, opening up and alerting compared to 2 days for the IV on full charge
IV is no longer made and is facing its End Of Life support within the next 2-4 years, the III just went bye-bye for support for the most part
Sensitivity on V is improved over the IV,however at time can be TOO sensitive and result in a False alert,(adjustable via pressing keyboard "S" in codeplug view in programming software on PC
to tighten error correction on the tone decoder)

The III/IV series are junk. Every time I hear someone say how much they love their III/IV, I just shake my head and wonder if they really know any better, or if they're just blessed with 110% coverage and saturation by whatever radio system they're paged from. Contrast that with people who have used every model from I through V in areas with spotty/fringe radio coverage on low band, will tell you that the II was the best voice pager /\/\ produced. Unfortunately they aren't made anymore, and parts are NLA, so the II isn't very viable these days. The V is a fair bit better than the III/IV series, but in terms of sheer sensitivity, selectivity, alerting reliability and durability, the V still doesn't measure up to the II. Sure, it has quite a bit more bells and whistles, but all of that comes at a price, unfortunately.

True, the II was an awesome pager. When the change to synthesized pagers from crystal base happened,we all realized how much better the old crystal technology was.

Don't get me wrong, as much as I love my old Plectron from 1967 that still works as well as the day it left the factory, and I have an old Minitor I sitting in an amp charger that picks up as good or better than any modern day receiver out there...I do understand that synthesized units are much more practical. Especially the ability to program multiple tone sets on the fly. The frequencies may not change often, but more and more guys are joining multiple organizations or becoming members of multiple specialized teams, and need 2 or 4 or even 8 different sets of tones. The Keynotes were great little pagers, crystal controlled RF, synthesized tones.
