The numbers troopers use on the radio is their badge/ID number. It doesn't relate to anything in their zone, county, or troop. My neighbor is #1222, and is assigned to Jackson Co, if he gets transferred to the bootheel of MO, he will still be 1222.

I know this is resurrecting an old thread, but I finally sat down and did some research on the zones. The way I figured them out was by looking through old press releases on MOHP's website. When a new trooper gets assigned, it usually says something like, "Trp. Smith will be assigned to Troop A, zone #, county."

Sooo.......here's what I have so far in the map I've attached. The first letter is obviously the troop and the second is the zone #. If the numbers/letters overlap more than one county, then that zone covers both counties. If the numbers/letters are all in one county, that zone is just one county.

Hope it helps.......it's a work in progress.

MHP Unit Numbering System
This numbering system is used throughout the Department of Public Safety. Highway Patrol badge numbers now include the 1200 series, as shown below. Previously only Water Patrolmen had these numbers, but due the growth of the Highway Patrol, the two agencies numbering now overlap.

Unit #s Type of Unit Weigh Stations:

First Digit indicates Troop
Second Digit indicates weigh station number
Direction of travel follows second digit

(Example: "C5 North" = Troop C
Weigh Station #5, Northbound lane)

0-999 Highway Patrol Officers (Badge #s)
1000-1099 Commercial Vehicle Inspectors
1100-1199 Radio Technicians
1200-1299 Highway Patrol / Water Patrol Officers (Badge #s)
1300-1399 Federal Government Agencies
1400-1499 State Fire Marshals / Gaming Commission

MHP Vehicle Markings
Highway Patrol cars are marked in the following ways (according to the patrolman's rank):

Rank Markings
Troopers Fully Marked & Lighted (Outside)
Corporals Fully Marked & No Outside Lights
Sergeants & above No Markings & No Outside Lights

Their radio numbers are issued at the academy. They only change if they get promoted to LT and above I believe. One of the press releases I read said something like, "Sgt. Smith, radio #753 has been promoted to Lieutenant and will assume radio #101".

I don't like that really. In Kansas, we keep our radio number from when we get hired until we retire, no matter what happens to you. The only exception is a couple people have taken their dad's radio numbers when they retired.

I've updated the MOSHP zone map after reading the latest "Patrol News" that listed the new recruits' zone assignments.
