I'm about ready to take the dive and buy one. How is the speaker sound in a moving vehicle? How much does this it weigh? Is it bulky ? Is it smaller than pro 96 ? I'm thinking about using a vent mount. I've seen the pictures. Once I get a reply, I'll ask on the mobile installation board for recomendations on a mount for a dodge pick up vent mount- thanks

I assume you are talking about the 500. I have one in my car mounted on a pedestal mount. I think it may be too heavy for a vent mount. Also, as I remember, the manual states that you will need to run an AMPLIFIED speaker. That is what I have, and it works great. Hopes this answers your questions.

I think it was from the Verizon phone store. It was one they were selling to be used with a PDA phone. I found that the cradle had to be bigger to accomodate the size and weight of the scanner, which is generally more than a cell phone.

You NEED a amplified speaker ? or it just sounds better with one in the vehicle

On page 31 of the manual, under "Connecting an External Speaker," there is a note that says: "You must use an amplified speaker with this scanner. Non-amplified speakers do not provide sufficient volume for comfortable hearing."

You can use the old 'paper-clip" trick under the external-speaker connection to the antenna and ground out the "resistor, it works and makes the regular external speaker louder....
