A friend of mine will be getting his license soon and wants to put a mobile in his Cherokee. He also wants to listen to FM broadcast since the radio in his jeep doesn't work. I know Baofeng has this capability but what about the big names? Yaeseu, Kenwood, Icom, etc.?

Thanks!

I don't remember which Yaesu mobiles include the FM broadcast band, but I can confirm the the Yaesu Vx6r does receive the FM broadcast band very well. :). 73, n9zas

Broadcast FM but not a receiver in stereo nor HD radio. Most new infotainment systems are now builtin the vehicle.
Just get a radio you can talk comfortable. Baofeng has a tiny mobile radio with 2M 220 440 with a price of $150. Bought two of them. The Mike looks huge next to the radio.

The Btech 2501 has some sketchy reviews on Eham.com so you may want to read those, but pretty fair reviews on the Btech 50 watt dual band uv-5001 gen3 which I've been looking at. But not sure that it has the FM broadcast band? 73, n9zas

The Leixen VV-898S (25-watt dual band) does have FM broadcast reception and it's very small, too. Our club bought 6 of them to use in dealer-donated vehicles as SAG vehicles for a bicycle road event support. They worked great with a mag-mount TRAM 1185 dual-band antenna.

The specs says it has FM receive but it apparently doesn't matter. No one seems to have it in stock.

All the mobile Yaesu multi band radios do plus broadcast AM. That is 817, 857 and 897.

Prospective ham is just starting and the cheapest radio there is $600 in good condition. The above mentioned models are not exactly for mobile use except the 857.

Didn't see where there was any money problem in the OP post. As has been said many times on many posts, you get what you pay for. All those I listed can be used mobile and portable, thus flexibility included. OP specifically asked about he big three as well. Time to start leading future and new hams in the direction that there is more to ham radio than the CCR.

The OP was looking for FM broadcast, not AM.

Interestingly enough, both of Yaesu's System Fusion® HTs, the FT1DR and the FT2DR, have FM broadcast receive capability, but none of their Fusion mobiles (FTM-100, FTM-400 or FTM-3200) do.
