Is 453.02500 (Volunteer Medical Service Corps of LM and Narberth) being used a trunked channel? It occasionally sounds like the Control Channel of a trunked system. Or is it part-time encrypted?

I was unable to attend but did watch the last meeting from my desk. No one stood up for the public comment part. I just want to say that for anyone attempting to change minds if you are looking to truly get through to these people it is important that your argument stay on their level. Us getting to hear them on a scanner is an added bonus and even citing the scanner user who trailed a car after a bolo and helped catch someone I personally don't believe happens often enough to sway them. I would stay on the path of interop with neighboring agencies including other counties, added costs of the radios, etc. I personally agree that it makes sense to have...for some channels but not all.

So I attended today, and sat through about an hour and a half of typical local government stuff before being allowed to speak. I kept it short, and asked that the county review it's decision on encryption based on the fact there are in fact secondary users of the system (us) and that a majority of our neighbor counties are staying un-encrypted. I also plainly stated that there are legitimate arguments against encryption, but that I wasn't the right person to present those (at least not yet). Comm. Shapiro thanked me and noted that it would be entered into the books. I suppose that's where it ends, however I think a proper follow up is to start emailing the commissioners about your concerns. For sure, even if I'd given the worlds best arguments, one person wasn't going to be enough to make the commissioners honestly think about it.

So I'd ask that all Montco residents email the commissioners at the addresses listed above, and let them know how you feel. I plan on doing that shortly.

On a side note, was anybody watching? There were three cameras, but two seemed to be related to security, and the third seemed to be focused only on the panel of commissioners... So not sure if my ugly bald mug ever made it on TV.

Comm. Shapiro is a typical politician who will just placate you. Typical response.

While not disagreeing with you, I'm not sure that there was much more he could've said - in fact, I think the BEST I could've hoped for is a unanimous "yeah, we agree with you" from the commissioners, but even then the most it could've been followed up with is something like "we'll bring it up with the DPS".

Anyhoo, the video is up on the Montco website. I'm horrified to admit that I did in fact make it onto the feed. Please go easy on me.... I was nervous as hell (just fast forward all the way to the last few minutes of the recording).

First, thanks for even showing up and bring this to their attention. Many of us cannot be there. Second, I was just saying that like most politicians, unless there's some ground swell its swept under the rug.

I am curious. What did you explain to the commissioners here? What do you mean that you (us) are secondary users? Thanks

I agree. I wonder in today's environment what the media will do if/when there's some sort of major incident and they have no access to PD transmissions. I'm sure we will see them complain big time to the county when that happens. (just saying....)

Media doesn't care about that anymore. They wait for press release to hit the fax machine/email , copy and paste.

Trust me, until everything becomes totalitarian, "chosen" media outlets will be given** receivers capable of monitoring select communications.

Well watching any recent incidents, they always source Broadcastify.com - so waiting for a fax/press release may be the only way they get details. But THIS is what Montco PD chiefs want - controlled information.

I mean that while I may not be a PRIMARY user (I'm not a dispatcher or a cop), I am a secondary user (listen only). Not sure what else you could take out that. I left it up to the commissioners to figure out what my secondary use is:

entertainment, public oversight, community watch, news content sourcing, etc...

All of these reasons are why we are listening, correct? Because we cannot respond to transmissions doesn't mean there is no value to us (if there weren't, we wouldn't be listening).
