First of all you need a digital scanner because the Sheriff and Park Police are on digital talkgroups. Secondly if you do have a digital scanner, did you program the Base and Offset frequency - needed for UHF trunking? Thirdly I have all the frequencies programed into one bank and it works fine.

Traffic on Morris Trunk System

I setup the Morris County trunking and all the channels seem to be dead. I set it to just do a Scan of all IDs, but the only activity I get is on 176.

I'm new, so I'm wondering if this is normal or am I missing something in the setup? I added both frequencies and its obviously working cause I do pick up something, but I just thought it would be more on this system.

Dennis,

There is really not that much activity on the system. The Sheriff's Office and Park Police are the only police agencies dispatched on it and the Prosecutor's Office runs 100% encryption. Both the SO and PP are dispatched on TG 32784. The dispatch center is known as "Comm 2." The 91 series cars are the Park Police. Their Tac channel, referred to as Channel 4 is TG 33072.

Most departments that are dispatched by Morris County are still on low band. Rumor is they may go to the trunked system and use the MGLE talkgroups, but that is not what the system was designed for. The system was designed for interop communications for all agencies in Morris County. One such example is Morris County Airport. All fire agencies will initially be dispatched on their respective VHF and UHF channels, but will use MIRS-1 and then switch to a interop TG specific to fire to coordinated activities. I haven't officially confirmed this as most traffic is repeated over UHF or VHF, so by montiring that you pretty much get an idea of what's going on.

You will occasionally hear police bases calling each other on MIRS-1 (TG 33328), but everyone seems to still use SPEN-1 since other agencies like NJSP, Feds, etc don't monitor the trunked system.

I'm using the portable version of your mobile scanner, the BCD396T. If you haven't done it yet, go to the Uniden website and download the free programming software. Alot faster then entering everything by hand. If you have trouble finding it, I have 996 software as well I could zip and e-mail you. Good luck !

I have a BCT8. It looks like the system uses APCO-25 which my scanner doesn't support. I don't get why I would get some IDs and not others.

I'm new to this, but I think I set it up correctly. The only traffic I've seen in the last 3 days is on ID 176 and 272.

That is correct cbartow the Sheriff and Park Police are digital you cannot get it without a digital scanner. The id's you are picking up are 176(ROAD Dept) and 272(Morris Area Paratransit) aka MAPS..MIRS is also Digital so you wont get that either :(

The reason why you get some talkgroups and not others is because the system is mixed-mode analog (which your scanner supports) and APCO25 digital (which your scanner does not support). Public safety runs digital which non-public safety runs analog.

Thanks for the clarification. I'm busy enough trying to keep up with the local activity as it is.

Gives me a reason to eventually upgrade the home unit and put this one in my car. :)

You should be good as far as monitoring all the agencies in the county as most are still analog with the exception of Parsippany and Montville PD's (Fire and EMS is still analog).
