• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I know for P25 systems you are going to need to enter a system key. I've looked at some posts and different threads online that you could use a system key generator n enter ur trunking system WACN. I got a Motorola XTL 2500 and Id like to update the zones and channels. I don't know the system key. I would like this unit to be Non affiliate only and receive.

You don't need a system key, but it will work like an older analog scanner with no tracking. Playing around with system keys can be a path to disaster and a bricked radio. The way to get a system key is with permission of the system license holder, which has odds far beyond the lottery.

if the administrator gives you a system key, great. You fudge around and create one and it tries to get affiliated to a tower, you're screwed. Bricked XTS25k , maybe an official visit if you're persistent or malicious, equipment seizure, charges, etc...

if the system administrator doesnt't, buy a scanner.

Im a firemen n this xtl 2500 Ive got it all that I need to perform an update and to make the following changes to zones n channels in the unit. its one of our old decommissioned ones with our old 800 system. I like for this to be in my pov. a scanner is an option. Ive seen many setups from all over n a lot of guys have the Motorola XTL 2500 and even the 5000s. beautiful crystal clear audio. rugged and built to last. Ive used these in field and just phenomenal.

Here and there
The system administrator can allow it to affiliate but not transmit legally.

The passive scan method is a subject many are eery on as it takes a lot of research, reading on and doing right. Any minor error may cause system interference or worse or anyone tied into assisting and it gets attention they also draw them self into legal issues.

More important is if it's property still of that entity, it may fall under computer crimes for altering it.

I lock all the equipment to prevent our guys from altering things and running into a disaster of learning hard way as some have before legally.

I have suggested the unication g5 to many as its better than a scanner, don't affiliate.

There is other models that can scan and not affiliate but the rpm costs close to 800 so it's no go for many plus having to purchase a radio.

Motorola has made this a issue when they could have done what others did and allow it to not affiliate and not TX without proper key. Instead this is the delima for many and nightmare for system admins.

If you want to use a commercial radio as a scanner get a Unication G4 or BK KNG-P800..
Those have the ability to do exactly what you want with out the ability to transmit.
