• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hello everyone!

I have been looking everywhere I can to find the Motorola RSS Spectra programming software, but I can't seem to find it. Where could I find the software?

Thanks!

Motorola RSS Spectra software is now over 40 years old. You will find out that it is a much bigger issue to make it work on today's computers than finding the RSS itself.

I’ve seen people program a Spectra on DosBox with a Windows 7. I just need to find the software and save it on the Toughbook. I’ve gotten the GM300 RSS software to work on the 7.

Spectra RSS may run, but you stand a good chance of bricking a radio if you actually try to write with it. These radios were in production when the average PC was a 386/486 and the first Pentium came out- and RSS was written for timing routines accordingly. Resurrecting these relic radios means using period correct hardware and software if one wants good results.

Listen to this advice. You may be able to read it just fine and may be able to write it. Others have had success. But and this is a HUGE but, this software was written for very specific CPU clock speeds and bases its communication with the radio on those speeds. It also looks for a real serial UART. We still keep a 486 machine in the back with pure DOS 6.22 for the twice a year we need a DOS machine.

We have also bricked MANY a customer radio on dosbox and windows 7 machines. We have also successfully programmed them on it. Our policy is to try to match the programming environment to what was used back when the radio was supported. This is why we have a real DOS machine as well as Windows 7 32 bit machines all the way up to current Windows 11 x64 machines.
