Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

So I am new to programming radios and I have the job of programming the radios at work now. We have several channels setup but these radios are capable of private calls to specific contacts. I setup a contact in the cps software and set it to private call. I can upload that and select the contact and hit the button and it says its starting a private call but nothing is happening on the other radio. Does anyone know of any setup guides? Do i have to have a specific setting or capability on my repeater?

The receiving radio also has to be set up for private call.

I got it working sorta. I can place the call and the other radio hears it but can not reply back unless they go to contacts and start a private call there. All radios have private call enabled.

Hang time issue maybe. If you respond within private call hang time then the call should stay private. I not fast enough then the receiving radio will revert to its programmed TG. Keeping a private call going is often a bit of a challenge since there are timers running. I don't have any channels set for private call only to a specific unit but rather I use menu to select a contact to call which means there is a timer on my end as well as receiving station's. Work around if you only need a few contacts would be for both of you to have the other set up in a dedicated private call channel. When you are called direct (probably while on a normal channel) you can switch to the other units direct call channel on your radio. What you are doing now is essentially that. To improve what you have try to find all the hang time timers and increase the time.

Make sure both contacts are in both radios. (or however many there are). Then select contacts, notify that one and when he (she) answers it should be private back and forth if it's set up correctly.
