To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have a xts 5000 that I just got back from being programmed. It was programmed for nas. When I go to each zone, channels 1-15 are blank but channel 16 is programmed in each zone. I have 6 zones. The guy that programmed the radio told me 1-15 are conventional channels and 16 is the only trunking channel. And that I can only use the radio in scan mode. So I can’t sit on one specific talkgroup.
A friend of mine has a xts 1500 programmed for nas for the same area as me. With his radio he can go to zone and all channels are programmed and he can sit on a specific talk group. Ex. North channel, south channel.
So my question is, is my 5000 programmed correctly?

Funny, I was told the same as you, and mine are all programmed for scanning talkgroups only (NAS). I didn’t know that it was possible to be able to change channels and sit on specific talkgroups without affiliating. Learn something new every day!

That is not the way. Because it allows you to access the trunking talkgroup directly on channel 16.

The proper way: (I will show this for ONE programmed zone.)
Create a zone of 32 channels. (or more)
Channels 1 thru 16 are conventional channels, each of which has a mode slaved scan list consisting of only TRUNKED talkgroups.
Channels 17 thru 32 (and beyond) are trunked personalities.

The trunked groups in the scan list are members of the trunked personalities that are in the channels 17 and above.

DO NOT have the chan/sub keypad option enabled in the radio. This prevents you from directly turning to a trunked personality, which makes the radio "unsafe", and able to affiliate.

With six zones programmed, all six would follow the same pattern. Channels 1 thru 16 are conventional channels with trunked mode slaved scan lists attached to them. Channels 17 and up are where the trunked personalities are hidden.

Tell your programmer to do it over, following this pattern.

I have a similar issue I have a Motorola XTS 5000 model 3, 700 800 MHz and trying to load talk groups and not able to figure out how to work all the talk groups individually one question I don't understand what the receive and transmit frequencies are? For St Joe county South Bend when it shows there's 15 different frequencies being used any help would be greatly appreciated it does work I am able to hear parts of a transmission but not as a whole it's like half of the conversation is cut off into multiple frequencies

No offense but just stop. It is obvious that you have no idea of how a trunking system operates and you are on the road to having your radio register and affiliate which in all likely hood will get it inhibited/bricked not to mention the possibility of your radio interfering with actual subscriber units.
Stick with a scanner/unication pager as they will not interfere with the system you are trying to monitor.

I bought this Motorola XTS 5000 on ebay as it stated it was non-affiated radio meaning I would be ble to program my talkgroups and use it as a scanner only. I'm also in the process of ordering two new scanners a whistler ws1040 and the whistler ws1065 thanks

Marshall knows what he's talking about as do I. NAS is fine if one knows what one is doing and understands the ramifications of getting it wrong, and they reach far beyond the radio not unmuting. Pro-tip: no one ever got arrested, convicted or in legal trouble for programming a scanner incorrectly. The same can't be said for unauthorized programming of trunking radios. Those who care and feed these systems do peruse these forums...hint hint.

There's no such thing as a "non affiliated radio" as you receive it, if it's a Motorola radio. What makes non affiliation possible is the KNOWLEDGE required to program it properly for non affiliated scan.

It's YOUR knowledge that makes this possible. If you have it.

If you lack this knowledge, and clearly this is the case, then your messing about with it is likely to eventually put you in a position where your
radio is transmitting and causing problems.

There are tutorials online, and even tutorial videos on youtube, that can teach you . Be aware, not all of them are strictly correct.

If you are committed to NOT being safe and using a scanner, then read/watch the various tutorials FIRST.
