Silent Key
US Forest Service and Virginia Division of Forestry were on scene. As of lunchtime today (2016-11-22), fire had grown to 2,700 acres, and was 0% controlled. Fire is located on private land, and in the Mount Pleasant National Scenic Area of the George Washington National Forest in Amherst County.
Comms were monitored on the STARS system “RED3” (TGID 3035) which was being referred as ‘C3’, and on conventional frequency DoF-1 (151.47500 MHz) simplex. No USFS comms have been monitored yet.
A Helitack base has been set-up on US Highway 60 at the Forks of Buffalo, across the road from the VDoT office. Saw two different helos doing water drops. A yellow Bell 205 and support crew from Helicopter Express (Chamblee, GA) was refueling at the base. A second helo see was a white painted Chinook, see making water drops over the fireline.
Helicopter Express is licensed for a pair of Itinerant Frequencies: 151.505 and 151.625 (WQLU207), but I did not hear any comms while in the area.
