Help Programming May Be Needed . . .

I have the PSR-600 (same as the Pro-197) and I absolutely love it. Truly the best scanner I've ever owned. But one thing you have to realize about these scanners is they operate a little different from those a few years ago. If you have not had any experience with current digital scanners you will likely require some assistance when you first get started with one (I know I did).

Once I learned to program mine properly and really use the features it has it's been unbelievable with all it will do, some of which I didn't even know about until I bought it.

I'm just saying, once you buy the model you choose you will probably need a little assistance to get going with it so don't get frustrated with it. The folks here have been great at helping people figure out their new scanners if help is needed.

Lake County is all digital (P-25). Polk county will be changing soon. They are in the process of installing new radios and opening their new communications center. I am having trouble deciding if I should go with BCD996xt or GRE psr600.

My decision was easy since I have both the Uniden BCD996T and the RadioShack PRO-197 (relabeled GRE PSR-600) mobile scanners. I run them both in my car at times and the GRE scanner gets crushed by strong nearby transmitters, making the received signal difficult to hear. It emits this wheezing tone along with the audio that covers the modulation.

Meanwhile, the Uniden just cruises along. When the Uniden does get overloaded, which takes quite a bit more r.f. to do, it behaves like other well-made receivers behave.

As a point of reference, I run the GRE sitting on my dashboard with its back-of-set antenna, so it's already getting less signal than my Uniden with a rooftop antenna, yet it still gets overloaded. This is all happening while monitoring 800MHz trunked systems, which is the only scenario in which I could get away with such a poor antenna system.

So based on these empirical observations side-by-side I'd have to say get the Uniden scanner, no doubt about it. All the features in the world become useless if the receiver stinks.

Will the Radio Shack Pro-96 pick up the new digital stuff? It says "Digital Trunking" on the device.
Yes for VHF/UHF or 800/900 trunking systems.

764 or 385 MHz frequencies will require Win96 software with the Extended Frequencies box checked but the frequencies will need to be set as FM Mode and cannot trunktrack.

I will have to buy the wires or cables to do this, but sure will. It has to be cheaper then buying a new scanner. This one cost a small fortune.

Thank you so much for the help.
