MPSCS Towers.

I live in the Village of Romeo and about 3 miles from the Romeo tower. I pick up the Richmond and Mt. Clemens towers better than the Romeo tower. Why is that? Anyone else have the same problem or living that close to another tower?

I've run into a similar situation. I live in Macomb Twp, MI. I monitor the following towers:

Romeo
Mt. Clemens
Richmond
Holly
Detroit
Northville
Howell

Many times my scanner will hit on the Howell tower! Then other times it will toggle between Romeo, and Mt. Clemens. Go figure?

Thanks for the reply Bill. I only use the rubber duck antenna on the 96. I can pick up the following towers:

T202 Romeo
T203 Lakeport (once in awhile)
T204 Richmond
T20A Mt. Clemens
T209 Detroit
T701 Detroit Simucast

Another tower you might want to try and monitor is in Lakeport, which is located north of Port Huron along old US-25 (now M-25). I am sure that when St. Clair County makes the move to the MPSCS, this will be one of primary tower sites they will use.

How does P25 trunking work? It seems like there is only one site for every county. With a conv. radio system you need mutiple repeaters, for this you only need one in each county?

Actually, Berrien County Michigan has three towers which serve it. These are Coloma, Sawyer, and Sumnerville (which is just across the county line).

These towers, as are all other the towers in the MPSCS system, are linked together. Depending upon the locations of the units which are authorized to use a particular talkgroup, you may simultaneously hear the same conversation on one or more towers.

The real beauty of the system is that if one of the mobile units in the Berrien County system travels to the other side of the state, it will automatically "affiliate" with that tower and will be able to communicate back to its base station. The conversation will not be heard on any of the other towers in between (unless of course another unit with the same talkgroup is in range of one of the other towers)! This is all transparent to the user due to the magic of digital.

Cellphones work in a similar fashion. You can travel to the other side of the country and a person in your home area can call you using only the usual seven digits of your local phone number. But instead of a talkgroup, it uses the electronic serial number (ESN) of your cell phone. One difference between a talkgroup and an ESN is that there are likely several users authorized to use a particular talkgroup, while you are the only one authorized to use your ESN (and the only one who can receive your calls).

I gonna have to pay more attention the next time I am on Chapel Road, I thought the tower was west of the Cass County line. I guess sometimes we drive by something so fast, that we don't pay attention to what and where we passed it, now You have my curiousity!
