To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hi,

Quick question. Seems stupid, but I'm really not sure.

I'm programming an MTS2000 at the moment and filling in the zone information. I found something that I never thought about, but want to ask to make sure I'm correct.

Is there a space in between the zone name and channel name? So, if my zone name was "FD" and my channel name was "CH 1" would it show up as "FDCH 1" or "FD CH 1" - like I assumed?

Can anyone verify?

Thanks a ton.

As far as I have noticed, yes, there is a space when using a zone name in a jedi series radio with a full display. I noticed your signature says you have a model 1, I'm not sure how the top display shows both zone and channel alias. -Or if it does at all.

My signature is outdated, I guess you could say. I recently acquired a Model III, and I'm in the process of loading the codeplug up with my settings before I send it to a friend for programming.

So yeah, this isn't for the model 1... Hahaha. I believe zone names aren't even possible with those, and if they were, they wouldn't necessarily be of much use with the 6-character display.

Hahah, I've never owned a model 1, but I'm sure it would say "Z1 CH1" and that would be it.. Lol.. that really wouldn't work out so well if you wanted to go over 9 zones or over 9 channels hahah.

Im not sure off the top of my head, but i can switch mine over and try it for you. I typically dont use the zone number display as i can tell what zone im on based on the channels in it that i can select. If you set it to not show the zone with the channel, then you get a full 14 characters that you can use for names, which i find very nice.

I'm not sure of your question, but,the model III has 2 lines of 14 characters each.Line 1 is the alph tag you give the zone and Line 2 is your alpha tag for the channel.

You will have to leave a space between the zone and channel.

The MTS and XTS5000/XTS3000 operate the same way. I usually set the zone to 3 characters and and put a space before I type the channel name in.

Yeah, that's really it, to be honest!

I'm planning to have a zone named, say, "FD" and the name be the town, same for "PD" and "EMS" and what not. I wouldn't mind it like the CDM where you scroll through zone names and then once you select it, instead of having a zone name you just have a channel name. But I believe this radio won't do that.

Yep, you noticed... The HT, not the MCS... Thanks, though!

An easy way to do this and have the space in. . . . You want a 3 digit zone name. . . .make the display length for that 4 digits and only populate 3 of them. Then you don't have to remember to put a space in.

It's a real pain to have to remember a space when putting in about 100-110 channels at a clip.

You should try it when someone drops off a box of MTX8000 B5 or B7 models that all have different firmware versions and you have to program 70+ talkgroups into each of them and can't clone. . . . . No drag/drop in the DOS based software.

of course this antique trunking system is being retired sometime in 2014 and being replaced with a P25 system so I can finally retire this old DOS BOX computer for programming!

That's a good idea, I think I'll try that out.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys!
