If you take a USB-1 cable and install a DB-9 connector instead of the connector that Uniden uses for the radio, don't you just have a USB to Serial converter? What's special about it?

Pretty much but this requires no additional items, soldering or programming. You could certainly rewire a USB-1 cable, which is what I was thinking about doing before I splurged on these. (I stink at soldering small items...)

One could rewire a USB-Serial adapter if they choose, this saves them the work. I don't know if you would need any special drivers, the cable I mentioned uses the regular USB-1 driver.

Thanks for the info. A logical but somewhat pricey choice. I'm only dealing with 5 such radios though so this is a viable option as they're rack mounted and I'd much rather connect to the rear than have the plug in the front susceptible to being bumped into...unlikely but possible.

Small items, a soldering iron, and me are not a good combination either. Thanks for the info; I had no idea these existed.
