I'm jealous. If I even look at a scanner or transceiver online my wife cringes and says no before I even say anything.

Don't forget that you live in Arizona now. Your attic will very quickly become unbearable.

Nice work, Rich. I was confident your new shack would be impressive.

Yeah, I may not be able to get much done each day I work up there. I think once I get the coaxes run down the wall I can add an antenna or 2 each morning before the sun rises.

n9jig - rich, and scancapecod - scott, consistently have the best looking shacks !. this is imho. this is not to subtract from all the other fine looking shacks. my shack <since i moved> is not a shack, but rather a hodgepodge of radios here, and some there. i don't have much capability for anything else at this time.

Nice shack Rich. I was in Phoenix last weekend. My daughter/son-in-law/grandson live near Scottsdale. I get out there fairly often. Would love to come over and see that stuff in action sometimes. Also, best of luck with your new position with Scanner Master.

Rich where would I locate racks like that? Do you make the cut-outs or are they commercially available ?

Jaw droppingly awesome!

Sensational shack setup Rich!

Well done!

Interested to know how you handle the audio from so many radios.
Do you employ a multichannel mixer to mix the audio to one source?

I am about to embark on remodel and I am looking at several different ways to distribute audio from numerous radios.

Enjoy your new layout!

Regards, Commscanaus.

When I first racked things in the old house I figured I would try it and see how the audio worked. If needed I would use some external speakers. Turns out I didn't.

The concept of relay racks includes a bit of space between the racks to allow insertion and removal, that combined with the open backs allowed the scanners' audio to be heard just fine.

I thought about a mixing panel a few times but never pulled the trigger. I am used to audio coming from different directions and it helps me to figure out what radio is talking.

In another thread we have been discussing how to get the antenna coax from the attic into the office and due to several reasons the Big Cheese has decided that they will be run down one corner and boxed in. We have also decided to pull the carpeting from the office and replace it with ceramic tile to match the other rooms.

This will result in the pulling out of everything, including the furniture so when it all goes back in it might change a bit.

I will update the photos when the remodeling is done in a couple weeks.

First...AWESOME SETUP! Second real quick question...how do you find (overall) the performance is of the attic antenna setup over throwing them up on a mast outside lets say. Right now I have an antenna on a 20' pole outside the house but I'm sure the wife would love for me to figure out another way to do it. Thanks in advance! :)

I really have no choice. The new house (as was my last home) is in an HOA that prohibits outside antennas. While I haven't lived in a home with outside antennas since I was in high school I don't have the reference point so much.

I can say that comparing the results with my attic antennas to friends with outside antennas, the outside ones are always going to be better, all else being equal. Add up the elevation and the lack of reflection from other metal items in the attic and you will always be better off with the antennas on the roof.

As Shreck once said: "Better out than in". While the context was different it still holds true.

Thanks for the response! Kind of confirmed my suspicions. Weighing the outside look of the house and the wife's happiness with some degraded signal range! ;)

Here's hoping HB1301 passes! It may give you more of a chance.
