Hey all,

I'm a scanner enthusiast here on Long Island New York, and i listen to the Nassau P.D. alot. Specifically in my area (8th) Precinct). I always wondered where the dispatchers broadcast from ?.

Also, Is the location also the point of broadcast to the cars ? Where the antenna's are? Because its strange that i get booming reception from the 1st & 7th, but right here in the 8th, my reception struggles on the 2nd and 8th frequency. I have a very good portable with the highest rated antenna (Diamond SRH77CA). So i figure it must be a location issue. Some area's the 8th is booming as well. Are the brodcasts line of sight ?... alot of ?'s , sorry....My gratitude to anyone with info..... Pete

Hello and Welcome to RadioReference, Pete.

The Nassau PD Dispatchers are in an underground room behind Police Headquarters on Franklin Avenue in Mineola. There are main antennas at HQ as well as repeaters at each precinct. In terms of reception, you may be seeing overload, could be poor wx, etc. If you are in an area with alot of trees, that could also adversely affect reception.

Ahh....excellent ! ...Thank you very much sir :) . I do have alot of trees in this neighborhood which are probably mess'in with the signal. Can wind make a difference ? I walk my dog by a school which is very open and it's very windy and the signal appears to fluctuate. I'm assuming the transmissions are line of sight ? Thanks again my friend...... Pete

Just came to mind, Is the fact that the dispatchers room is underground specifically to protect communications ? Is it re-enforced in some manner ? or just simply a basement. Just curious.....thx...Pete

The transmitter for the 2/8 precincts is located atop a broadcast tower in Syosset. The 1/7 precincts are broadcast from atop NUMC. The system was installed in 1982. When it was younger, the transmitter coverage across the 8th precinct's geography was excellent. But, as you can imagine, components are aging and signal quality has degraded.

The dispatch center is an underground bunker. Understanding the choice to construct this way requires thinking about the context of history at the time. That many years ago our greatest fear was nuclear attack by the Soviets and fall-out shelters were all the rage.

Great Stuff :) , TY very much, appreciate it. No wonder the 1st & 7th blow out my radio lol, i'm right down the road from NUMC . Now why oh why couldn't they put the 2nd & 8th on NUMC lol. I guess sections of the 2nd might suffer i suppose. Thanks again.......Pete

P.S. I'm new to RadioReference, awesome sight for all things radio, Thanks :)

Hmmm.... Maybe your referring to Droopy ? LOL . I gotta meet this guy, he has a very slow drawn out droopy voice and he has to be a dispatcher for almost 40 years. Probably has the most time on the job over there. I've been listing to him since i'm very little. And i'm 47 now. He's on the 2nd & 8th mostly on the day tour. I always shake my head and laugh when i hear him lol. I'm always thinking that by the time he gets the job out, and a car arrives, whatever incident will surely be over lol................. Pete

The 2nd PCT area has always been poor, radio wise. It does have something to do with geography.

They used to have a lot of problems in the 5 towns area of the 4th PCT.
There is a repeater on the 5th PCT house so strong that I can pick it up on close call (or whatever RS calls theirs) WITHOUT AN ANTENNA! It is so strong locally that I can not receive the 3rd and 5th on non-scanner radions (Like the Icom R5, general coverage receivers) they just get totally overloaded!
I think they still have dead spots in 5 towns, and Tac 10 has always been a joke. Yes, they need a new system.

Really... Does the units in the field have alot of tx/rx issues ? What kind of portables do they use. I'd like to know more about there current system and any update on the 500 mhz move. Which is what i gather they are doing. Will that significantly Improve there issues just going from the 470's to the 500's ? . Maybe i'll understand better knowing more detail of a new system, thx ......Pete

Currently they use ~20-year old Motorola Sabers. However, I have seen some of them carrying XTS-series units recently as well. With the 500mHz system they should have increased coverage because of the high-powered microwave links between the repeaters.

When it comes to coverage: Higher towers, more power & more receive sites, will be the best formula. Lower frequencies work better when there are no obstacles, higher freqs penetrate buldings better. Nassau's 500 system should be kicking, if its done right. See my first line.

Microwave links have no effect on coverage issues. CloroxCowboy is 100% with the previous post on coverage.
