I just wanted to start a thread to collect any known information about the North Carolina Highway Patrol logistics changes coming in August.

If I'm understanding the news articles to date:

Troop G Asheville communications will be merged into Troop F Newton.
Troop D Greensboro communications will be merged into Troop C Raleigh.
Troop A Williamston communications will be merged into Troop C Raleigh.

Zebra units (Air) will be consolidated in Raleigh and Salisbury only. Kinston and Asheville air bases will be closed.

Budget Closes Kinston Highway Patrol Hangar, Williamston Comm Center

Does anyone anticipate any changes in how talk groups are configured?
What other changes can we expect for scanner listeners?

TGIDs should stay the same!
I don't know of any other changes that could affect us....!

Yeah, if you're monitoring the site that Raleigh is using! This new system will work the same as the old one in terms of affiliation.

There is even talk of merging the following as well.

Merging Troop E & H Communications together and moving it to Charlotte with DOT Traffic Management Center. (TMC)

The Greensboro comm center will officially sign off Monday Aug 12 at 10:00AM, and the Troop D dispatch duties will switch to the Raleigh comm center. Be listening, it's the beginning of the end of an era for some of us old horses that used to be NCSHP telecommunicators.

Yep, nothing like a dispatcher getting a call to a call in a small area 4 hours away that they have never heard of. At least Williamston was closer and they dispatchers knew the counties they covered. I bet there will be lots of delays as the Raleigh dispatchers learn the new areas.

I hope they are adding more dispatchers to cover the lost centers, otherwise I can't imagine what will happen in a natural disaster. Well, yes I can (I used to be a dispatcher for Norfolk PD and Fire) and its not pretty.

And a single dispatch center could mean a statewide loss of communication in the event of a loss of that single center. They would need to keep backup centers available, with personnel close by to staff them to get them up and running quickly.

Loss of a single microwave link in the system means Raleigh has no contact with anything beyond the remaining linked site. The sites beyond the broken link will either have to get along on site trunking or failsoft, and the mobiles/portables should be able to talk to each other, but there won't be any contact with the comm center through a mobile or a portable or a mobile data terminal, and low band beyond that site will be down except for mobile-to-mobile contacts.

I noticed today that cars using viper on the Shp D3 talkgroup are being patched back through to the 42.38 mhz Greensboro KIB439 transmitter.

Same thing they've been using. Low band and VIPER talkgroups. Nothing changes besides where the TC is sitting.

Yep. As Tumpetman correctly points out above Low Band Freqs and VIPER TGs are staying the same statewide as comm centers are consolidated.

Old habits die hard . . . Shortly after Greensboro closed up shop, more than one trooper from Troop D was heard calling, "D____ to Greensboro." There would be a long pause, then - slightly exasperated - "D____ to RALEIGH." Of course, then the response came quickly. Just this morning, I heard, "Greensboro to D____, be enroute to . . ." I just had to smile.
