hey all, yes i know that NDF (Nevada Div of Forestry) is moving over to the 800 system soon, but a question comes up in my mind. Are they going to keep using the VHF-hi system during fire season? I mean it would make sense for them too, since i doubt BLM, USFS and other agencies will want to put 800Mhz systems in their rigs. Also, where are the rptrs going to be? Same location as the VHF-hi ones right now?

NDF on 800 mhz

From an interoperability perspecive, I see this as a MUCH bigger issue than the hotly contested NHP issue. NDF has much more interagency radio traffic with volunteer companies, local sheriffs, ambulances and the Red Cross, especially in the rural areas of the state. This move will cause a lot of problems for these numerous groups.

Scott I second the interop issues. Most VFD's are still 150xmhz, Careflight is full of radios, and I've been told that there is like 18 in each chopper, just to communicate in the areas they operate and they don't have EDACS capability. Most fire fighters in Reno/Washoe County still carry a "old" Moto just to land CareFlight. Now with NDF going to EDACS, they too will have to carry EDACS radios, "old" Moto's for interop with VFD's and air band, AND the new Narrowband radios that all of BIFC is going to.

Reminds me of the paperwork reduction act.

All this new 800 crap is starting to bug the crap out of me, i mean with 800Mhz on a wildfire your not going to be able to talk worth anything, personally i think they should keep things as is with all radios. its bad enough i'm going to need to buy a new HT to monitor NDF, (anyone have a good one their willing to sell to a high school student)

It makes no sense for NDF to go 800 in the rural areas because all of the local PD’s and VFD and FD’s are VHF and migrating would mean everyone has to migrate because of the interagency traffic (as mentioned above). The only place I can see it feasible to go 800 is in Vegas or Reno. For example in Reno, Reno fire keys up and sends an engine to assist NDF on a medical emergency outside the city limits somewhere in the county. Then NDF keys up and dispatches a district engine and a VFD company to the medical. The NDF engine and VFD engine key up on NDF and go enrout and then key up on 800 Reno RED and advise Reno that they are enrout. I could only see NDF going 800 in the 2 big cities for that reason, otherwise it’s just stupid. I’m a volunteer fire fighter and can tell you this from first hand how much turmoil this would cause to go 800 in places like wells or Elko where I live. I bought my own VHF radio and don’t want to see my investment expire so quickly.
