Me and my son was outside and i happened to look up and seen a big jet with 4 engines and a small jet with 2 engines come up on one another and crossed at exactly the same time and point just one happened to be higher than the other or it would have been a disaster are they allowed to do this at different altitudes or did i see a near miss?It actually scared me thats how close they looked to one another!!

Hard to tell...

It's hard to tell. What altitude do you think they were at?

Sometimes from the ground, you get the illusion that they are "closer" than they really are.

They "could" have been in contact with each other by radio. Do you monitor air?

Not a near miss at all. I see aircraft of all sizes criss-cross each other all the time. And yes they are vertically separated at different altitudes. And now with the new RVSM equipped aircraft they can be separated by a narrow margin on 1000 ft. Not to mention if you happen to have your scanner with you and are on the right center freq at the right time you'll hear center point out each respective aircraft to the other. Not a big deal in this day and age of technology and a more crowded airspace.

I am guessing at this but let's say above 10,000 feet and below 30,000...And i watched them until they met at exactly the same time and point the trail left a perfect X pattern.

Your depth perception at 10,000+ ft is nill. They could have been separated by thousands of feet and given the appearance of a near miss from the ground.
