• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Need Help Verifying GMRS Repeaters – Koreatown (Los Angeles) Area

Hey folks, I’m new to GMRS but jumping in headfirst and could really use some help verifying active repeaters in the LA basin.

I’m currently based in Koreatown (Los Angeles) and have a Baofeng BF-F8HP 10W and a second unit coming soon. I’ve been monitoring 462.550 MHz assuming it was Mt. Wilson, but now I’m seeing conflicting info between MyGMRS, RepeaterBook, and artscipub.

Main questions:

1. Is there actually a public or open GMRS repeater operating from Mt. Wilson right now?

2. Are Altadena 700 (462.700 / 141.3 Hz) or Sunset Ridge still active and accessible from K-town?

3. Is Leisure World (462.550 / 162 DPL) the one I’ve been picking up this whole time?

4. Any confirmed open repeaters within 35–50 miles of Koreatown that I should lock in?

5. Lastly, is there a better way to get accurate real-time status on repeaters in SoCal than trying to cross-check 3+ databases?

I’ve already printed a full field book based on what I thought was solid data, but now I’m not confident in most of it. Any help getting my gear squared away would be appreciated. Happy to contribute once I’ve got my setup straight.

Thanks in advance!

look in this for a list of repeaters in your area. To log in use your GMRS license and make a password up. With GMRS most of the owners want you to ask them for permission to use the repeater.

GMRS is Los Angeles is kind of like the Roman Gladiators. It’s anything goes, kill ‘em all kinda thing. A well meaning person will put up a repeater and advertise it as open. Soon thereafter the jamming will begin and idiots making noises, jamming, cussing, being drunk etc will start. Not long after that the repeater will go silent. This has been going on for years, the FCC doesn’t care and it likely will never change. I use GMRS all the time around LA, but only on simplex. The repeater just aren’t worth the effort.

Main questions:

No, not that anyone will admit to.
2. Are Altadena 700 (462.700 / 141.3 Hz) or Sunset Ridge still active and accessible from K-town?
That is open and a great repeater for the rebuilding efforts in the area. A generous private donor is funding it. You coverage may vary.
3. Is Leisure World (462.550 / 162 DPL) the one I’ve been picking up this whole time?
You could be hearing Mt.Woodson in San Diego county if the conditions are good...same freq and pl. It's an open machine and on a good site.
4. Any confirmed open repeaters within 35–50 miles of Koreatown that I should lock in?
Monitor the ones you can hear. If you can hear it, you are probably able to hit it with the right gear.

5. Lastly, is there a better way to get accurate real-time status on repeaters in SoCal than trying to cross-check 3+ databases?
No.
Repeaters change on a daily basis in LA/OC/IE/SD. There is no master list. The websites maybe list 20 percent of the repeaters. They depend on user input for the listings. The best repeaters are unlisted.

The only repeaters that seem to be jammed are the ones who charge a membership fee and have a bunch of rules. The "Free Speech "ones are the most interesting to me since they are more than radio checks and "I'm monitoring"

You are your best source....your codeplug / list, will become personal to you, and more fun.

Enjoy

What did you find on 600? An owner that will let you use it?

Mainly Spanish speaking but it’s an open repeater and the owner has united the tones, View attachment 180573
That repeater is not in Hawthorne which would be near LAX at nearly sea level. It blankets So Cal and covers up many other 50w mountain top repeaters. Its on a major mountain top and probably running more than legal power.

Studies in laboratories have shown that prolonged exposure to GMRS repeater is LA can lead to stroke, memory loss, lack of appetite, CTE, possibly leading to death. Enjoy GMRS responsibly.
Does this exposure cause ED or impotence? If so, population control advocates will want GMRS repeaters in all major cities.

I wouldn't rely on RepeaterBook or anything else besides myGMRS.com for current information on GMRS repeaters. It is the best that GMRS has at the moment.

Palos Verdes...on the hill...right above Hawthorne.
There are a few boxes up there.
