HRM Fire, Police and EHS are all on the NS Trunked Mobile Radio system. Further to that, HRM Police / RCMP are on a digital system. To Simply listen to HRM Fire and EHS you will need a Trunk Tracker scanner. To Listen to HRM Police you will need a digital trunk tracker.

What model scanner do you have?

I have a bc 220xlt. when i first got it, it already had some police stuff on it but i erased it trying everything out. all i do is punch numbers in and some work and some don't. also today when i was out there was a call that went out to police and i was right by the incident when the police came up the street i heard it on the scanner before i figured out what was going on so i know it does pick up police freq i'd just like to know what codes to punch in. usually when im out for a drive i'll just turn it on to the police station and it'll scan through to see if anything is going on it has a svc button which goes to police,fire/emg,air, and mrn

I am sure that several of us would help you out, the only thing is that I am confused by what you are saying. According to everywhere I have looked the 220 is not a trunktracker and also does not pick up digital signals, so the fact that you heard what appeared to be police in Halifax is really extraordinary. You obviously heard it but I sure can't explain it.

And as for frequencies, HRP and most other major users around Hfx don't actually have frequencies. Well they do in a way but they jump around a whole bunch of shared ones, as that is the nature of a trunked system. There are several different sets of shared frequencies and the best set to tell you depends on where you live, as in what area of HRM. You could in theory then enter them into the 220 and monitor that local tower (site), but you would be getting other things as well as the police.

Let us know the area you live in.... as in which of these sites are you closest to? : Downtown, Geizers Hill (usually the best one overall if you travel around), Preston, Sackville, Tantallon....

I didnt want to come across as not being willing to share, it is just that it is bit more complicated than old-style conventional scanning. But here are the frequencies for the Geizers Hill site for the trunk system that HRP and many others use.

859.4375 HALIFAX, N.S.,GEIZER HILL, MAIN ST.
859.6875 HALIFAX, N.S.,GEIZER HILL, MAIN ST.
859.9375 HALIFAX, N.S.,GEIZER HILL, MAIN ST.
860.1875 HALIFAX, N.S.,GEIZER HILL, MAIN ST.
860.4375 HALIFAX, N.S.,GEIZER HILL, MAIN ST.
860.6875 HALIFAX, N.S.,GEIZER HILL, MAIN ST.
860.9375 HALIFAX, N.S.,GEIZER HILL, MAIN ST.
861.1875 HALIFAX, N.S.,GEIZER HILL, MAIN ST.
861.4375 HALIFAX, N.S.,GEIZER HILL, MAIN ST.
861.6875 HALIFAX, N.S.,GEIZER HILL, MAIN ST.
861.9375 HALIFAX, N.S.,GEIZER HILL, MAIN ST.
862.1875 HALIFAX, N.S.,GEIZER HILL, MAIN ST.
862.4375 HALIFAX, N.S.,GEIZER HILL, MAIN ST.
862.4875 HALIFAX, N.S.,GEIZER HILL, MAIN ST.

860.1875 is a data channel only except very occasionally so if you put it in you will hear nothing but noise, and then you can lock it out. Then scan the other ones and see what you get. This is all based on the assumption you live in the coverage area of Geizers Hill (By the way I call it Geizers and so do most others but in the official list above they use Geizer for some reason...maybe that is the correct name.... either way it is pronounced like Gheezer, not like the spout of water from the ground, or with a J sound. It is hill up behind Fairview that dominates Halifax.

Thanks for the reply, I know it's weird I shouldn't be picking certain signals up. I have been though I'm also fairly new to having a scanner as well. I live in the Fairview area of Halifax if that helps at all. And if I don't reply back to you right away today I'm sorry I'm heading away til the weekend. I may be able to get back on the net though to check my messages thanks a alot

I think in order to listen to what you want to listen to, you will need to pick up something else. A digital trunk tracking scanner is what you need. It doesn't have to be brand new, a Radio Shack Pro-96 or a Uniden BCD396T will work fine.
The BC220XLT cannot receive digital transmissions under any conditions, and I don't want to come across as argumentative but you were definitely not listening to HRM police channels on that scanner. Possibly something else.

he's been emailing me and assures me he can get Police on 220 but It's prolly Kentville PD

If he needs a scanner, which he does I have 2 Refurbs here... a 396xt and 996xt with 90 day warranty and programmed to the NSTMR and Fire Paging

All the activity on this system that is shown as "A" in the mode column is Analog audio. You will be able to program things that are in your area and actually follow conversations by seeing which Talk Group you are listening to rather than just disconnected bits of conversations that you would hear on the non-trunking 220.

If your area were ever to be affected by what is known as rebanding, the BCT8 can be upgraded to follow the newer frequencies.

You can get software to program/control the BCT8 from your computer.

Going to Cape Breton you can pick up Truro police analog on the trunk, then comes the New Glasgow area with I think 3 forces on VHF, then nothing until Cape Breton Regional Municipality. whose police department is on VHF analog... As for CN Police I havent heard them in ages. In theory they are on the RR VHF band possibly on 160.575 in a pair with 161.235, but I have also heard mentions that they use the HRP channels. Someone else here might have a better idea on that one.

Here are the talkgroups for Truro and the frequencies for the police forces mentioned above:

thanks a lot for the reply back novascotian, next trip on the way to cape breton i'm going to have to test them out. One of these days i'll end up getting my hands on digital trunking scanner, there just so expensive. But worth the money in the long run i guess because you get all the action.

I recall a post suggesting here or on another site, that the CNR Police was down to one constable
in the Halifax. If so, may operate on cellphones more than radios.
They only have for the Halifax to Moncton line and sidings to look after.

I havent seen a CN Police car in quite a while. I vividly recall the time a few years back when I saw one speeding through Halifax with lights and siren and wondering what could be so important for CN Police? Not sure if it was a coincidence but I heard later that the Tim Horton's near the VIA station was going to be closing early that day.. LOL
