I live in Fraser have almost all the Macomb county area uploaded to the scanner get a lot of dead air and nothing really local, What am I doing wrong. Swapped out the antenna and didn't help. Thought about getting a single booster but not sure if that is the answer

If you have ARC500 or WIN500 software, attach your programming file and I will take a look at it. Send your file to a compressed (zipped) folder to be able to attach it.

A copy of your programming file, as tvengr noted, is a good place to start.

However, looking at your county in the database, the Macomb County Simulcast site consists of more than a dozen transmit towers. Depending on your exact location, you may be suffering from the effects of Simulcast Distortion. See this Wiki page for more expansive details on how this affects your scanner:

If your listening to Macomb Simulcast with a WS1040 you may be experiencing issues receiving the system due to the WS1040's inability to properly receive simulcast signals. Do some searches on the forum around "simulcast distortion" and read up. Some of the newer model Uniden radios do much better on Simulcast.

With the first file, so far I see you have 4 identical systems for Warren Public Safety and 2 for Sterling Hts. There is no reason for that. Where did you find the one that says System? Where did the frequencies come from for that? I uploaded the file into a Pro-197 and then downloaded it into ARC500 which is the software I normally use. I find it far easier to use than WIN500. Let me take a look at 111 now and see what the difference is.

tv,
The frequencies entered (for all 4 on file 111) are the primary & alt control channels for the Macomb County Simulcast. But, based on the OP's response to his location, he's down in the southwest area of the county, with four of the simulcast sites surrounding him.

There is no reason to have 4 identical systems. Every one will have equal problems with simulcast at the same location and you will be scanning between 4 systems instead of staying on the same one which increases the possibility of losing the control every time you change systems. You have to assign a system to each talkgroup. With 4 systems all with the same name, I wonder if that confuses the scanner. It may not know which one to use. Other than turning off the attenuator and audio boost, I don't see any change from the other file. I was going to tell you to turn off both of them. I see that this file is a gr5 that I can load directly into ARC500. Once again, where did you get the frequencies for the "System" system? I suggest that you try deleting identical systems so that you have only one for Warren Public Safety and one for Sterling Hts.

See WS1040/WS1065 vs Simulcast 800 see video in my message #2

in simulcast areas you just cant use whistlers. I know the WS' are less $ and people accordingly gravitate that way, but your scanner absolutely IS the issue. You can try turning on the attenuater which rarely works, best way is to remove the antenna and a paperclip as an antenna. Its too much signal coming in.

Many will say get an SDS Uniden that certainly would work, but are pricey indeed. If I were you I would consider as well the 325P2, 436HP

We are down to one system. Everything is on the MPSCS system Macomb Co simulcast site. I added Sterling Heights and the Michigan State Police. This is a gr5 file for ARC500.

I will take a look at what is available on conventional frequencies and add that to the file. Unfortunately, the 436 can suffer from simulcast problems also. Make sure that you have the latest firmware in the 436. The latest update (v1.26.00) helped with simulcast reception. The SDS100 and SDS200 were built to work on simulcast systems.

I see that Warren public safety talkgroups are all listed as deprecated, meaning that everything has migrated to the MPSCS system, which is what you have in your scanner. If you go to ScanLists Preview in ARC500, you will see what is programmed in each scan list.
