• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I have skimmed through the website, but haven’t found good help. (Don’t judge) I’m new to radio programming and I have a Motorola XTS 1500, the programming cable, and the software for it, but CPS keeps telling me that the radio isn’t found… I bought the radio from a person who I assume was getting rid of them for their police department. And I’m trying to remove all the channels frequencies from it and replace them with my local fire departments frequency. I’m glad to further discuss more if anyone can help.

And what's the programming cable look like? The XTS1500 and XTS3000 cable are the same physically but have a different pinout and not interchangeable.

So I have the correct program now, and I think I've deactivated the transmitting buttons, would someone be able to show or teach me step by step on how to turn the radio into receiving ONLY!!! And how to put in the frequency I want?

Considering the complexity of the software that you'll be using, what you're asking would be difficult, if not almost impossible, in a text-only environment like this forum. Your best bet would be to study the multitude of youtube videos on programming Motorola radios. Be sure to learn the "language" of what all of those thousands of settings relate to, since only one small error can prevent your radio from functioning properly - or at all. Are you aware of which band your radio operates on versus which frequency you wish to monitor?

And if it's trunking...well...there are plenty of threads on why this is a bad idea, especially for a novice.
The CPS help files do contain videos of how to get around CPS and do things like drag and drop, pick lists, etc.

As a system admin trainer and system maintainer................if you slip up, there is a good chance you will be committing a crime AND/OR causing issues with an active life safety system.

What’s a good scanner to buy and easy to program then?
Good scanner to buy, & easy to program can’t be used in the same sentence. That would be called a conundrum. Although about 12 years ago I did see a scanner where you’d simply enter your zip code, & the radio would show the systems available in that area. Choose a system, & it’d show all the TG’s available. Then just choose the TG. But I don’t remember if it was a digital scanner, or just analog.
