I have a Tk250 (G) VHF Handheld unit from Kenwood. I heard it is upgradable to 160 channels from my 32 channels. I talked to my local radio dealer Radioland and Kenwood. Kenwood told me it is a software change so I talked to Radioland and they told me it was gong to cost $300 plus to change the unit to 160 channels. Is there anyway I can change to 160 through the KPG23D DOS Version. Any Help is Appreciated.

Okay.....If you have the KPG23D program and a programming cable, you are one step closer...
First, you need to startup the program (NOTE:: THE KPG23D PROGRAM WILL NOT RUN UNDER DOS IN WINDOWS XP!!!! YOU WILL NEED TO REBOOT YOUR COMPUTER STRAIGHT TO DOS!!!!)
When you have the program started and get to the program screen,
1) Press "ALT"
2) go to the MODEL menu
3) Select the model you have/want...e.g. TK-250 (32 CH), TK-250 (160 CH), TK-350 (32 CH), TK-350 (160 CH).....Keeping in mind the model (250 or 350) you have to program
4) hit enter and start writing your program. It will change the software pertaining to the channel capacity when you write to the radio itself.

If you run into any problems, don't hesitate to email me.... searchrescueff@comcast.net

P.S. I would definitely go talk to those people at Radioland....charging you $300 just to plug up their computer to your radio, and change something within the software taking 5 minutes tops.....can we say IGNORANT FOULS!!!!!!!

i"ve got the problem in TK-250 programming. After accidental button pressing i got the message on the LCD "PROG". I cannot exit this mode. Turning the radio off then on doesn't solve the problem. It's just "FROZEN"! Then i tried to update the firmware but with no success.DOS shows "ERROR WRITING WHILE WRITING".Strange error. The right COM port was activated. Any idea on how to make the radio work?

Didn't even realize that archived threads went back this far.

I've had this problem. And I can only offer two words, BAD PROCESSOR!!! So here's the bad news, the parts, time and labor would be too great to replace that bad boy IF you could find someone to do it and find the part. The good news, it's a lot easier and cheaper to replace it. Sorry.:(

Welcome to RR.com Alan24...here is your first lesson in how the forums work...please do not bump an almost 3 year old thread. Your response and question had almost nothing to do with the original topic.
Closing this one.
Thanks for understanding!
