Hi, I am new to the forum. My only interest is in listening to the Downriver Mutal Aid Talk Groups. I know very little about scanners and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction as to a reasonably priced scanner that would be able to pick up these groups. I saw a post regarding, "PRO-96 and PRO-2096 are back on sale (thru 3/3/07) at Radio Shack for $399.99". would either of these work and are there any cheaper that would be efficient for what I want?

Thanks in advance for any help.

yes, you'd have to buy either... or a Uniden BC250D or the BC296, or any other digital scanner in either the mobile/base or portable flavors

The system works very well you should have no trouble receiving it.

well sure, probably eBay.

The BCD250 or whatever it was/is called was the first uniden digital scanner made, from back in 2002/3. It will do the downriver system, since it uses the 3600 baud control channel. You'd need a newer on, like the BC296 or the PRO-96, etc for systems like the MSP system, which uses the 9600 baud apco-25 control channel.

I think about $150 is what the BC250D goes for these days, you also need the BCi250d card, which is often included with the radio at online auction, in order to decode the data stream.

In my humble opinion, go get the PRO-96. I bought mine at the Southgate Radio Shack on Fort Street, it picks up everything Downriver just fine. I've had it for about a year now.
You have to have digital to listen to Downriver. And the Shack scanners are the cheapest price I know. The radio should come pre-programmed with Downriver in it.
You could go with the mobile if you want, but I like the handheld only because I can carry it from room to room. Once you get it, feel free to post about questions.
