I live in Barrie, Ontario and I have a Retevis UV 5R radio I got off Amazon and I was wondering if you can pick up police and fire frequencies on it?

I've looked on a few websites but I can't seem to find any that work. I get confused with PL tones and how to program the radio to listen.
Can anyone give me some tips on how to set it up properly? It would be a lot of help.

You can program some analog conventional frequencies in that radio, such as OPP beat repeaters (perhaps you can receive Orillia from your location?), MOH vehicle repeaters, and maybe some marine channels since you are near the lake.

Hello! As mentioned above, most if not all public safety are in digital now-a-days. However, there are some mobile repeaters in analog mode that the OPP still use. I am not sure what the frequencies would be for your area, but in and around Ottawa we have the following:

410.86250
411.31250
411.51250

Trying listening to those frequencies and see if you can hear anything.

Also, that radio you have may also transmit on those frequencies, so be careful to not keyup the radio.

In addition, here are some other OPP frequencies - some of which are analog:

Hope this helps.

If anyone else has further information to help this gentleman, please share.

The MOH analog mobile repeaters should be very busy in Barrie but other than that, it will be hit and miss. Try 149.440 to hear the base stations get paged out.

Barrie PS and FS are both P25 with no analog channels. The OPP do patrol hwy 400 so you might catch some chatter from their analog mobile repeaters.

The surrounding fire departments are all DMR so you’ll be out of luck trying to listen to them.

The City of Barrie uses a DMR trunking system so you won’t be able to listen to them either.

As mentioned I would lock out transmit completely. I believe this is possible in CHIRP. Or at the very least program an offset so your TX is a GMRS or MURS frequency. I would not want to take the chance of an accidental interference situation.
