Im getting ready to order the sds100 and was wondering if these upgrades are necessary for my zip code area (48124) and what they would bring to the table:

ProVoice EDACS
DMR
NXDN

Would like to listen to police/fire/EMS and possibly listen to the control tower/airlines at DTW as I'm almost directly under the flight pathI'

Thanks for any advice for this noob to modern scanning

Save your money (for now). You can always add these late if and when needed, it's not difficult. There is very little in Wayne County, Michigan on ProVoice, DMR, or NXDN, other than a handful of businesses. Most all of Michigan, especially public safety is on the MPSCS, APCO P25 Phase 1, so you should be all set with the radio as it comes out of the box.

So with MPSCS (Michigan's public safety commision) project 25 phase 1 being mode FMN, I'd be safe out of the box then? Is there a less expensive radio to use the project 25 phase 1 than the sds100?
Again, thanks

You could use a BCD436HP if you do not have any SIMULCAST SYSTEMS (MULTIPLE TOWERS TRANSMITTING THE SAME FREQUENCY) you can find a used 436 now for under $300 with DMR and NXDN already installed.
