Hello everyone, just got back into radio and I'm a bit confused. I currently have a Bearcat 200XLT, planning to upgrade when able. I went to the local Radio Shack store to p/u freqs for Tulsa / Creek county police / OHP / sheriff / fire - EMS etc... Another RR member told me about RR and so I've been checking out the freqs here. Some of the ones here are not on the Radio Shack list and vice versa. I wonder which freqs I need to monitor Tulsa and surrounding area police fire etc? The ones here or the RS list or both or ?????????? I'm after accuracy - I think... Also wondering if everyone on 800 mhz no longer uses any of their old freqs? (should I use them too?) When using the RR info which do I program into my radio, the "frequency" or "input" ? Thanks for your help and time!

I would use the RR freqs. They are constantly updated and verified by users. This is the only place I ever use. When programming a non-trucked freq, use the freq and not input.

If you're monitoring a trunked system, such as Tulsa Fire for example, you only need to program in the control channels, which are listed in the RR database. Then you set up the talkgroup ID's for the agencies you wish to monitor and listen to that bank on Closed mode to hear only those ID's. If you listen to it on Open mode for that bank, you will hear everything on the system, including some you may not want to hear, such as public works, etc. Hope this helps you out.

Like OkRob said, you need the freqs for Tulsa and then put in the talkgroup IDs you want to hear. Example.

For the City of Tulsa Fire Department

You need to program into your scanner the following (check your manual to see how/if you need to do the following):

Set a bank to the type of 800MHz trunked system. For Tulsa it is a Motorola Type II SmartZone.

Next, put in your frequencies for that system. For Tulsa, you need to put in the following:

856.46250, 856.76250, 856.93750, 856.96250, 856.98750, 857.46250, 857.76250, 857.93750, 857.96250, 857.98750, 858.46250, 858.73750, 858.76250, 858.93750, 858.96250, 858.98750, 859.46250, 859.73750 , 859.76250, 859.93750, 859.96250, 859.98750, 860.46250, 860.73750, 860.76250, 860.93750, 860.96250, 860.98750

Afterwards, you need to program in the talkgroup IDs you want to hear. For Tulsa Fire, you probably want their dispatch, plus at least each fire district. So in you scanner (again, refer to the manual if need be), put in the following talkgroup IDs. If you have the ability to use alpha numerics on the label, I would suggesting tagging on the name of each talkgroup.

Talkgroup - Name Tag

35856 - TFD 6A MAIN
35920 - TFD 6C D1
35952 - TFD 6D D2
35984 - TFD 6E D3
36016 - TFD 6F D4
36048 - TFD 6G D5

Finally, refer to the manual on how to set than bank on the scanner to open or closed mode. Open mode will scan all of Tulsa's freqs and pick up any talkgroup that is keyed up (in turn, it should display the talkgroup ID). In closed mode, the scanner should only pick up talkgroup IDs you have programmed in (such as TFD). You can usually also lock out a talkgroup ID in case you want to program it in but not listen to it all the time.

I have all of TPD programmed into my scanner but I keep most of their side channels locked out since I don't really need to hear anything but their dispatch, but I can unlock one of those channels if they switch over to it (i.e. if they switch to a tactical).

Hope that made some sense.

BC200XLT cannot track trunks!

Everyone else is giving you advice as if you had a radio capable of following a trunked system. You don't and you said so. Talkgroups are meaningless on a BC200XLT!

About all you can do is enter all the freqs listed (the outputs, which are 45 MHz above the inputs) and lock out the control channel. Fortunately, on a SmartZone system, which the DPS/Tulsa system is, the control channels don't change much.

The downside is, and it's big, is that you will hear everything on the system. As a call switches from one freq to another, you'll have to hit the scan button. I forget if the delay is fixed on the 200, but if it can be disabled, disable it!

Anyway, yeah, you need a new radio so you can follow the trunked systems, especially the DPS/Tulsa system. That's where the traffic is these days. I don't know about Tulsa, but in the Metro Norman area, there's not a whole lot on VHF any more.

I bought a BC200XLT brand new in 1988. Good radio, nice and loud, though I did find it pretty deaf on 800 MHz compared to the BC3000XLT that followed it.

To clarify my response above, I replied to his question after he said this:

I am fully aware that he cannot trunk track on his BC200XLT. I took his question to infer that he intended to obtain something that he could trunk track with and tried to clarify his question about using the "input" side.

Well what a treasure of info! Yes, I know the 200xlt does not follow trunking. I've been looking to get RS pro97. ( I see these Bc200XLT's go for 100.00 + on ebay so I'll prolly put it on there and then I'll have the bulk of the cash to get the new one) All the freqs and info listed above is going to get me on the way once I get the new scanner. Thanks all for your input and help!!!! What would you guys recommend for a great hand held unit - the pro 97 or is their something else?

The Pro-97, and all other GRE made trunk tackers other than the Pro-92 and Pro-2067 just require the control channels only. You do not need to enter all 28 voice channels. For Tulsa the control channels are...

860.9375
859.9375
858.9375
857.9375

After that just enter you talkgroups like Rob said TFD-Main 35856 etc...
I personally like GRE made scanners better than Uniden. For the way Tulsa is now the Pro-97 will do the job just fine. Enjoy...

Your learnin' start now. Take a look at this wiki page - it has a great deal of information on the PRO-97, including a link under 'related pages' for an Easier to Read manual. I'd bookmark this wiki page....

http://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/Pro-97

But before you do that you will need to get up to speed on the basics of trunking. Our wiki has links to FAQs where you can start to learn about this topic. According to the database, the city of Tulsa has several encrypted IDs, and a couple of digital talkgroups which the PRO-97 will not handle - but it will handle everything else.

In addition, Win97 - which is the software of choice for the PRO-97 - has the ability to connect to the database and download freqs and talkgroups directly. To enable this function you have to be a paid subscriber.

You will also need a cable - likely a USB cable, since serial ports are practically gone from PCs nowadays - to connect the scanner to the PC. The GRE USB cable is getting hard to come by - the GRE website has them backordered until December, but a few local RS stores may still have them in stock. Other USB devices may also work with the PRO-97 - folks here and no doubt on the PRO-97 Yahoo groups may advise you further on this.

You can find out about trunking as well as the subscription process (and much more) in our wiki. Go to the top blue toolbar, hit 'wiki' . The subscription link is on your right, the link to the trunking articles is under 'Forum Specific Topics' (scroll down to get to it).

Learn to use the database and the wiki - together with the forums, they pack a powerful information punch :.>> 73s Mike
