• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

The radio portion boots up within 5 seconds like any other APX BN and users can immediately PTT and receive calls.

But what channel does the user know they are on until the radio fully boots? "Northwest Central Detectives Tactical-14" or "Central Dispatch-1" 🤣

The top display is functional as soon as the radio portion boots up, same as any other APX.

Unless MSI makes a monumental blunder and prematurely discontinues them, forcing agencies to other manufacturers, which I suppose is always a possibility.

They did it here when they discontinued any and all support on the XTS/XTL radios; most of my customers made a beeline for Harris and Tait.

The APX Next is going to be a disaster IMHO. Check out some of the Youtube videos of the boot time for the radio. I believe the radio is Android based, and it literally takes as long as an Android cell phone to boot up before it's fully functional. That's just not going to fly with officers who grab one out of the charger and want to head off to duty. They might be good for some EMA manager or whatever, but for the patrol officers that thing is going to be a mess if a department deploys them to the masses.

I may get an APXNext all-band for testing and so on, but if you have to go to the touchscreen to do much of anything it's going to be el floppo around here. And don't get me started on VIQI.... with our current radios I can't get 99% of our personnel to remember anything other than the name of the dispatch channel, let alone zone names and what is in each zone. I can just imagine one of them saying "VIQI switch to Zone XX" (it being the wrong zone) and then trying to say "VIQI go to Channel XXX". Won't work, they get ticked off and have to haul the radio out of the holster, manually scroll to the desired zone, and manually switch to the desired channel. Won't fly.

And ditto on boot time for the KVL5000; it's Android based, takes forever and 8 days to boot up. If the APXNext is anything like that, it will be a massive PITA.

Not me they are garbage.

Not around here; we have several still deployed and they're working fine, although some look like they've been through the wars. Good, reliable, rugged radios.

The issue comes in when replacement is necessary; Motorola's prices are considerably higher than Harris, Tait or EF Kensonwood, so our customers ran away from /\/\ screaming. Plus /\/\ codeplug management is a PITA; with the others, I can use a single codeplug for multiple models of radio simply by telling the software what the radio is, and the software ignores any programmed features which aren't in the radio.

I wouldn't consider that the same thing as ditching the legacy APX design and only retaining the NEXT series. The XTS/XTL were replaced with the APX series, and there was quite a few years of overlap between the series where the ASTRO 25 line was still supported. To the untrained eye, there really isn't much difference between an XTL and an early APX mobile...O5 heads, same deck, etc. The biggest difference was that the APX supported TDMA. Yes, the portable design was quite a bit different from the XTS, however they are both pretty straightforward "standard" radios. The NEXT is anything but standard.
