They don't call them "The Weather Wars" for nothing... I like to refer to the whole spiel as a "circus"... y'know... full of brightly-painted clowns, dog & pony shows, feats of strength (not necessarily the airing of greivances, tho ;)), etc.

For me, the level of coverage is ridiculous... but the media are responsible to bring viewers to their sponsors, and this apparently works. So, you take the good with the bad.

KWTV got to use their new HD helicopter tracking tornados last night. Did ya notice Channel 5 (KOCO) had helicopter video of the storm for once; they must have borrowed one from an affiliate station again. The "storm coverage" competition is tough (and expensive) here in Oklahoma City.

I wonder if KWTV recorded that tornado video in true HD.

Yes it was recorded in true HD, and it looks great.

That would be cool to see, Dave. It appears you are in the know over there. I understand HD newscasts in OKC are a ways off, but could the Helicopter HD video get patched through to the HD transmitter? Sounds simple enough, but I'm sure it would be complicated and then it's only to appease the few of us with HD sets.

If I recall correctly, the original Sky 5 was of the Bell Jet Ranger genre and then they somehow got a larger and more powerful helicopter. Then, just when helicopters were becoming the news gathering gimmick of the decade, it went away.

The Channel 5 helicopter may have gone away, but they still have the metal building outback built for a helicopter.

And it makes a dandy place to work on live trucks:)
