New Hanover County TRS Request for Assistance

Good Afternoon -

I am making several trips to NHC over the next month and have been monitoring quite extensively! I am trying to tighten down the TRS as it displays in the database and if anyone here can provide assistance with that I would appreciate it!

I am going to clean the formatting up here shortly and if anyone has anything to add please submit the info or PM me to make contact about it!

OK, Heres what information I have gathered. I gathered a bit of info today from a source on this sytem. I cannot name this source right now, so please don't ask.

There original sysID for the NHC TRS is 5430. NHC now has some digital TGs that are showing up with a sysID od 01b9. Also, the smartzone is enabled on the 01b9 system settings. This includes some PS Tac channels, along with NHC Fire Dispatch, and NHC EMS dispatch, and a few odd TGs here and there.

The control channels I have for sys 01B9 co-incide with the frequencies listed for the Seabreeze site on the RR database.

Also, there are some new tac channels, listed as South Tac 1, 2, 3, etc that are showing with a sys ID of CF31, and is showing control channels (frequencies) that co-incide with the seabreeze site as well.

I am trying to make some sense out of this. As a former Motorola man, this one has me guessing. What I am thinking is they have the seabreeze site as a stand alone site operating in analog mode only, which provides the Tac South channels. Then, apparently their upgrade to digital is going along rather well, and they have a part of their system running as an Astro P25 system under the sysID of 01B9.

I have also identified the 3 backup TGs that are programmed into the NHC fire radios, that are used on the Corning, GE and NHRMC TRSs as well. Robbyboy, shoot me a PM on all of this.

Also, if anyone else has any insight, please let me (or us) know.

Based on nozman as well as confirmed by personal observation, I will be splitting this system off in the next day or two. Trying to decypher all of the different Law Talkgroups as I keep finding more and more and I have never seen so many different types of units for NHCSO. I have captured almost a dozen types of units and only identified about 3 of them. Again, anyone that can provide insight is welcome to help!

new hanover county astro p25 transition

i am not a scanner guru, but maybe i can provide some insight to the new hanover county transition to digital p25.

the original motorola smartnet (analog only) system has been in existence over 10 years now, and is a single site located at Flemington. It is still up and running.

in 2005, the county entered into a contract with motorola to upgrade the smartnet system to a multi-site digital p25 system.

motorola designed a p25 simulcast system using 4 sites: flemington, seabreeze, progress energy (north part of county), and the control tower site (at the 911 center)

the design also included expanding the existing smartnet (analog only) system by adding analog equipment at the seabreeze site. the seabreeze site gave immediate coverage to the beaches while the new digital system was being rolled out. this also allowed the users to continue using over 2500 mts/mcs2000 motorola radios (which are analog only) until they could afford to upgrade those 2500+ units to a p25 radio like the xts/xtl series.

the new 4-site digital p25 system was signed off and put in use in mid-2006 with over 97% county coverage, with only a few users (because they had not purchased digital radios just yet)

the primary PS analog smartnet talkgroups have been patched to the primary digital talkgroups until the analog equipment at flemington and seabreeze can be decommissioned in 2010. (this may be why some scanners are not getting as much traffic, because you may only see the smartnet (analog) traffic from Flemington or Seabreeze, when in fact, there is much more traffic on the P25 simulcast system)

some users are now/already have converted fully to digital only because it provides 4 times the sites (better coverage), and those users include Wrightsville Beach, Kure Beach, Carolina Beach, Wilmington, New Hanover County Fire, New Hanover County EM, UNC Police, (I may have missed some - but these are mostly references to PS agencies)

there are still some key users in the county that will have to convert to/buy digital-capable radios before they can make the transition to the new p25 system.

I knew the status of the NHC systems, but wasnt quite sure how they were set-up right now since I havent been directly involved with maintenance on the system for about 6 years now. Used to deal with 5430 all day and every day, but not since 2002.

My daughter lives in Carolina Beach and we will be slithering our way down from Richmond,VA to see her mid July. Thanks to this thread I don't have to ask any silly questions.I have a GRE500 and hope to get in some good listening. My only questions are: to listen to CB & Wilmington do I only have to put in the TRS freqs. and TG's ? They are both fully digital if I read correctly. Which police dept of the 2 have more going on,I would think Wil but being the summer you can never tell. Thanks again.Good thread.
