So your saying the plethora of current radios in state DOC is NXDN upgrade capable? Wouldn't require a plethora of cash to upgrade to a Kenwood NX radio? Then why not stay with what the state can handle from the VIPER level?

Not really. If they have a dealer that can contract a deal for a very large fleet order and work out the kinks, it won't cost as much as a APX and even so without that a NX 5000 comes default with nxdn, and adding p25 trunking, conv, is still way less than a APX radio so default it's cheaper with numerous added features.

Finally got a couple of hits from the NXDN system at the Women's Prison in Raleigh.

Heard them on 453.1625, NXDN 96 RAN 1 with an unlikely TG of 0. Limited traffic at this time.

Any idea how long it takes before NXDN goes into affect?

In Raleigh Central prison has been using it for over a month now, but Women's prison is only heard occasionally. It's slowly being phased in and is low power.

well now thats just a shame to hear about stanly... where else can ya go and still get to hear Voice Inversion being actively used in a public safety context?

sigh... joining the 21st century kicking and screaming....

That's OK. I've seen systems make The Great Leap Forward to from CSQ to CTCSS operation that was introduced in the ahhhh 1950's? ... as late as the mid 1990's.

Also systems built pre-duplexers and pre-Mocom70/Micor era that operated very wide T/R splits, like 8 or more MHz, just to have the enough isolation between the frequencies. Because the radios in use at that time tended to be somewhat narrow bandsplits on Receive and often much narrower bandsplits on Transmit, one solution to doing Talkaround was instead of doing T/A on the repeater output frequency, they might do T/A on the repeater's INPUT frequency, but with no or a different PL. Weird, huh? But at every step of moving to new technology & equipment, it was never opted to more fully update the system to contemporary radio practice.

Spent some time out at two of the Raleigh prisons with my laptop and DSD+. The Women's prison has the trunked NXDN 96 system up and running with a Network of R28, Site of 5 and RAN of 5. However it is very seldomly used (as far as I can tell, but I'm on the edge of the site limits apparently).

The men's prison, Central prison, is a lot more active but appears that it is not currently being used as a trunked system. I can not find the cc channel for the system, but hear traffic on the voice channels. Any thoughts on why they would be doing that or if I'm missing something?
