I am thinking about buying a new scanner. I live in Beachwood and would like to scan The Ocean County Trunked System, Dover TWP. P.D. (APCO-25 Digital), EMS/Fire Dispatch, State Police (Troop C), and some other surrounding cities. What would be the cheapest scanner that I can buy to do those things?

Don't waste your money on a digital scanner to hear Dover Twp. PD. Most of their transmissions are encrypted and no scanner can receive encryption. I removed their PD frequencies from my digital scanner altogether. It became very annoying, especially when the dispatrcher transmitted in analog and the unit was answering encrypted. I figure if anything big happens there, I have fire and EMS, which are analog. Point Pleasant Beach and Lakewood are also digital. Pt. Beach rarely encrypts and Lakewood does once in a while, so if you want to monitor those two also, go ahead and get one, but for Dover Twp., you're wasting your money.

For the county trunked system, you can get yourself a nice trunk tracking scanner at way less than half the price of a digital unit. And, the county trunked system is a real flame thrower. You will be able to hear everything loud and clear no matter where you are located in Ocean County.

OK, I found a 100 channel scanner on eBay that I'm watching, it's not a trunking scanner, but I'm listening to the Ocean County Trunked System on a scanner from 1985 right now.

The only problem with that is, yes you can monitor the trunked system in conventional mode, but you're stuck hearing all of the agancies, including Raod Department, Buildings & Grounds, and the ever so annoying SCAT buses. Wiith a trunk tracker, you can just program the talk groups for the agancies you want to listen to, ie: police, sheriffs. prosecutors. fire departments, etc. and that's all you will hear. It's up to you as to what you want to do, but I would strongly recommend a scanner that does trunking. It makes the listening experience much more enjoyable.

If you want to listen to State Police i would try to get a digital/trunking scanner because they are switching over to a digital system soon actully Troop B is already on it, rest of the Troops will go on it sometime this year.

I would like to get a trunking scanner, but I can only spend upto $50-60 and the cheapest one I've seen was $130, the RadioShack PRO-95.
