Hi, just got a sds200 for christmas and can't seem to get any audio out of it - am I missing something? I have been using a bcd996t for over a decade now with no problems programming it myself or with the help of software so it's not like I'm a newbie to programming a scanner. Hoping there is something I've overlooked because I really don't want to have to send the scanner back. I've tried the local NOAA weather station; the radio shows the frequency but there is no audio at all.

is the RSSI flashing ON in the bottom right of the screen when you receive?
Or any other screen indicators?
Squelch set to 2?
Good antenna connections?

Getting no audio on the weather frequency is not a good sign. I presume that you have checked to make sure the volume is not all the way down, and the squelch is not turned all the way up. Are you seeing signal bars when parked on the weather frequency?

Have you tried using an earphone, to rule a bad speaker in or out? If no audio on the earphone either, with the squelch all the way off and at least a mid-level setting on the volume, then, unfortunately, it sounds as if you got a 'bad apple'.

A lot of folks here are feeling that in their gut. We're all hoping that you're overlooking something so simple. PLEASE keep us posted. I don't have the radio or the manual in front of me. I'll check this thread again later when I get home.

Agreed. I bet the headphone jack is either stuck or broken.

I've tried the local NOAA weather station; the radio shows the frequency but there is no audio at all.

You said its showing the weather freq, what is it showing for reception in the top right of the display?

What is the volume set at on the display? Seems on my 200, when I rotate the knob to turn it on, and it clicks, and the scanner powers up, I have to keep turning like 5 more clicks before the sound is even set to 1 on the display. And squelch, from all the way counter clockwise, it takes 9 clicks just to set it on 1.

Lock/scroll/tune to your local NOAA and turn squelch all the way down, and volume up. Do you hear static/white noise?

As others have said - the recommended test is to check WX reception.
Barring the headphone jack / squelch / volume / (other duh! stuff), she is a 'gonner'.

Many (most reputable) sellers will replace a DOA radio, but don't wait to long to contact them, or the vendor will send you to Uniden.

So here is a photo of the display on the NOAA weather station. I have not tried the headphone jack, but will as soon as I can find a pair to test with. scanner.png

I resorted to testing it on the NOAA weather station as I was getting nothing, no white noise, no static, with the squelch to 0 on my normal frequencies I monitor and I should be getting some sort of noise with a squelch at 0.

Was just now able to test with headphones and I do get audio that way. Worth trying to pull in /out frequently or just send back?

ok then.
i had trouble with the jack of a 396T that i bought in 2007.
in about a year of everyday use in a lumber yard and being in my pocket it started.
computer speakers worked and i was going to make my handheld a new base with the speakers and then i pulled out the plug to move things and the speaker worked.
to this day if i plug anything in it, i have trouble with it for days.
so, yes i would send it back.

Unfortunately, I feel the same way and will begin the process of returning tomorrow, barring some relevant information that fixes the problem. Thanks to everyone for their help!

If you've plugged and unplugged the headphones a number of times and the situation remains the same, you have to send it back. If it "snaps" back to shape (so to speak), it's really your call. I never use headphones, but no one wants to start off with a new unit and a bad taste.

If the unit was purchased as an obvious Christmas gift, I doubt that you will have any issue with a return to Scanner Master. You might have to consider whether you want a refund or an exchange. This decision is always a pain in the *ss because no one wants to take a chance on getting a second unit from the same dealer with another type of defect. If you have the option, sometimes it's just better to return it for a refund and take your chances with Amazon or Walmart. A lot also depends on the type of relationship you've had with the dealer in the past.

Know that others have been through very similar situations and we all feel your pain. The SDS200 is a great unit. In any event, please keep us posted.

Also, do the re-jacking on the rear external speaker jack also if you didn't have a set of computer speakers you tried in the rear jack.
