so i looked it up and FAA says Rockford airport has a bunch of 120.X that i hear traffic on they also have a 290.375 tower Ground and 327.0 App/Dept. but i never hear anything on them i hear the Tower Ground and App/Dept on 120.X so can someone explain why they have a 200 and 300's freqs when they have the 120.X freqs?

Military, those are Mil Air freqs. My local airport transmits on both of their civilian and mil freqs simultaneously. Military uses their freq while civilian air uses theirs.

Not sure why you do not hear the tower on 290.375. Someone else may comment thats knows more about that airport. Is your antenna not the best at monitoring 290.375, or are you some distance away?

using a VHF/UHF ANT -- im not even 5 miles away at that distance a coat hanger should pick it up ... i have noticed here that both east and west App/Dept Ground and tower and clearance Delivery all seem to have the same transmissions

Not all airports transmit on civilian and mil frequencies simultaneously. It depends
What he said.

Not all civilian towers have a military frequency assigned to that airport, and those that do don't always have the transmitter on for simulcasting the VHF frequency. Riverside, CA (KRAL) has a UHF tower freq, but the only time I ever heard it used was during their annual air show when military aircraft would arrive and depart for the air show.

My guess is that if the airport doesn't normally have a use for the UHF, the transmitter isn't used for simulcasting the VHF.

On the ground, 5 miles is enough to make a real difference with terrain. How high is your antenna and what is the terrain? I live in what I call moderate terrain and an airport VHF 5 miles away is only a weak signal on a 40 ft tower receive antenna. Also note, many airport have two radio sites and one may be closer to you.

Chicago Center shows an RCAG located at Rockford. I'm just curious if you can hear the controller on 124.725 and simulcasting on 279.650 ?

.I put an antenna on the roof a few years a go and can now hear the controller on both VHF and UHF on one controller frequency

dont really get it since i have heard handoffs to Chicago on normal freqs so in my mind there is no need for RCAG
