Just stay with freescan you have, theres no DMR in your county. People lets not get too many steps ahead... he's just starting out!
Just go up to my reply in message 29 and watch those videos is all ya need to get rolling.

Far as the com port just get used to EVERY time you connect click the COM button to do a search for it.

The radio ships with firmware 1.06, upgrade it to 1.08.01 -

most changes are for DMR, but a noticeable improvement in digital reception and audio quality.

The Pro 96 was good in it's day, but that was long ago. I have a Pro 106, and it still does a good job even with my local simulcast system. Performance on simulcast varies greatly and location of the receiving radio antenna and transmitting antenna can make or break the results on any of the older radios.

I live on Onslow/Carteret County line, I have several scanners as many of us do, 325P2 will prepare you well for now and the future

Is the antenna that comes with this 325 scanner good or should I invest in an upgrade? If so what to choose

If your consistently seeing 3 - 5 bars of signal on digital, no need for another antenna. Tune in regularly frequencies well below the 800 MHz band? If you get an 800 MHz antenna the frequencies say in the 155's and definitely the aircraft band will suffer.

Yes I have that antenna and definitely will see signal strength's in that frequency band improve immensely.

Yes VHF suffers but I use the Remtronix 800, it works great at this location, there is a lot of 800 around here.

I’m new to this but looking for a handheld scanner that will support and allow me to listen in eastern NC. Interest works be Carteret County, NCSHP and military air as in MCAS Cherry Point. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I want something that will work however don’t need a super high dollar handheld because well I’m an amateur here
The list below plus the BCD325P2.....Digital trunking is in use there and the radios unfortunately are not cheap.
